Pictures from yesteryear                Home page

These pictures were sent in by ex and present Rumi owners.  Most of these photos were taken in the early 1960s

when Rumis were at there peak of popularity.

The above picture is of Stephens scooter Mart

in Richmond,  notice the lack of cars parked outside and about,  they were the days.

Here Dave Degan of Dresda Auto's rides

his Rumi at speed at Crystal Palace in 1960.

Our very own Tony Mooring was in the crowd enjoying the event, (lucky chap)

Check out Dave Degans (Dresda Autos)

This picture was presented to the Rumi club by Colin Seeley who is seen at the rear about to service the Rumi.

Colin was famous in the 50s for racing sidecars. Check out this website about Colin.

A rumi parked up outside Stephens,  I wonder what the owner was buying,  in the background

you will see Formichino and Tipo inlet manifolds.

Below is a Rumi rider on some kind of rally,  not

sure where it is.  Can anybody help.

All in a row,  plenty of Rumis for sale here,  notice the drop handlebars spread over the scooters.

Don't get excited,  remember this was the 1960s.

Below is an early Rumi club outing to Lands End.

Somebody had the great idea of placing the Moto Rumi

club on the sign at the rear.

Above.

This is a picture from my own library cc:  1965.

Me on the left,  my twin brother Dave and Peter.

This was our gathering place,  many Rumis would come and go from here much to the annoyance of the neighbours.

From left to right. Tipo sport, Tipo sport, Formichino

Another one from my album.

This was taken at Chobham common again cc: 1965.

Thats my mate Barry sitting on my brothers Tipo.

I remember it was a good run from Chiswick

Peter Warneford-Bygrave sits on his Formichino in Chiswick West London. The Rumi once belonged to Peter Rice back in 1963. In the background you can see a BMW Isetta bubble car.

Four Rumis in a line up back in 1965

Two Tipo's and two Formichinos outside my

dads garage in Chiswick West London.

The sound of all these Rumis going off at once

was pure music. My you the neighbors didn't

think so.

A nice side on picture of my brothers Tipo Sport.

Does anybody know where it is now.

Well yes actually. It is now owned by Peter Caisley.

See "The Story of 233 ALT" link

On the left is Dave,  on the right is Brian.

Both good friends from the 60s and still are

Here Tony Mooring sits on his Junior which he restored himself.  The bike ended up going to Switzerland.  The scooter is another of Tony's,

a restored Bol d'or.

Left is Brian Sherwood on his Tipo/Bol'dor

See below for the Tipo's history.

This is Chris Adams who owned 672 VMT back in 1963.  It was blue with drop bars and pretty standard.

Chris soon put twin carbs on and changed the front mudguard to a motorcycle type and painted it gold.

He sold it to Stephens scooters cc 64,

Here is the same scooter as it was when bought by Brian Sherwood from Stephens scooters in 1964.

Here you can see the front motorcycle mudguard, drop bars and gold paint, just as it was sold to Stephens.

Brian has now owned VMT 672 since 1964. It still has twin carbs and in its gold paint as done by Chris Adams. Chris can't wait to see his old Rumi again after some 42 years.

What a wonderful sight,  Homepride men on Rumis.  This is actually the Margate Carnival

parade during 1958, The first rider is Tony Fusco and behind him is Mike Willett not sure who the others were.  I missed the fashion of white boiler suits,  looks smart though.

This picture was sent in by a friend of the late rider Rodney Elms.  It shows what looks like a red Tipo Sport cc 1964

Nice picture of  Terry Davies's 11 year old brother Robin on Terry's

Rumi during 1962 enjoying a trip to Lands End.  Note the fairing as shown in the "Odd bits" Link.

Ray Sykes sits astride his Formichino cc 1960. Ray bought the scooter from Hatfield

scooters which was red with yellow wheels.

Ray at the time belonged to the Beatniks scooter club. Thats their banner hanging over the mudguard.

This picture appeared in the Scootering

magazine showing three scooters about

to go into orbit from a ramp. The middle one

is a Rumi,Reg 767 VMT.  Do you know

anything about it? If you do let us know.

This is how Eileen Ferguson appeared in the book A Century of Motorcycling in Cornwall cc 1960. The book was compiled  by the chairman of the vintage motorcycle club Roger Fogg

Tony Powell owned.this Junior back in 1962. A stone was ingested thru the carb inlet which didn't do the engine much good. He now wants to know whether YYP 889 still exists. Do you know. A 19 year old Eileen Ferguson with friend Fred Cottons Tipo Sport during a Burton on Trent scooter club run. Fred was the founder member of the club and still attends the odd meeting, Alas not with his Rumi.

father in law on the back

   of his blue Tipo Sport

LEFT: Mike looking very cool on his Rumi.  Is that a tiny screen

on the handlebars. Mike also

added stripes and white wall tyres. (Reg XCC 443)

To the right is Mike Tapping on his Formichino. KJT 939.

Mike left to live in Australia shortly after this picture was taken in 1963.

These pictures are of Formichino CBF 329 that was owned by Tim Moores in 1962. Does anybody know where it is today.

Above

Christopher Palmer sent this one in.

His dad chose and bought his Tipo

sport, good choice. Chris had some bad luck in his test when the carb top came off and ruined the test. Then Chris ran over a cat and bent the Rumi. Poor Rumi.

These two pictures were sent in by Steve Hobbs who now lives in Australia. XUA 839

Above and left an early original piston ring box with rings included. They were found in a job lot recently by a club member. As you can see they are priced at seventeen shillings and sixpence in old UK money. £.S.D.
