On a very blustery and wet Sunday morning at
Westwood, Junior Blues entertained Newcastle
Town in a match in which the winners would go to the top of the table.
In the event, Blues were too strong for
Newcastle, as they extended their superb unbeaten run to 38 games.
Blues started brightly
and swarmed all over the visitors. Efforts from Danny Gruic and Jamie
Robinson in the first ten minutes went narrowly wide but after that
the game became very scrappy as both defences dominated the opposition
forwards.
Towards the end of the half Junior
Blues regained the edge with Oliver Edwards and James Brough
both having attempts well saved by the Newcastle goalkeeper. As the
referee brought the first half to a close, Newcastle probably had
cause to be most satisfied, even though they had not had a shot at
goal.

The second half opened as brightly as the first,
and within a matter of seconds Junior Blues
went in front. Danny Gruic put Oliver Edwards
through and he easily beat the goalkeeper.
As Blues kept up
the pressure on Newcastle, James Brough had a good shot saved and
Jamie Robinson hit the post. However, Newcastle with the wind behind
them, came into the game for the first time as they tried to take
advantage of some strong clearances from the back, but the Juniors
Blues defence, superbly marshalled by Mitch Shenton, held firm.
As the game drew to a close Blues
might have extended their lead as Danny Gruic went close on
three occasions but in the end they had to settle for a narrow victory,
which gave them the vital three points. For the second week running
Blues had come up against a team with
a no nonsense defence which they struggled to get the better of. Even
though they have not yet found their best form Junior
Blues now lead the First Division and remain the team to beat.
Our grateful thanks go once
again to CROFT COURT GARAGE for their match sponsorship.
