Pilrig Park and Leith Walk have been added to a computer generated list of new litter bin sites requested outwith the City Centre.
According to a letter received from Mr J M Drewry, Director of Department of ENVIRONMENTAL AND CONSUMER SERVICES, we can expect to see area based squads with specific responsibility for litter removal, grass cutting and weeding being introduced to our area by Spring of 2001.
Prior to introducing these squads, consultation is promised to identify the areas of priority and to establish the main sources and causes of littering. "Coupled to this is a range of other initiatives including education services, media and marketing, community liaison and enforcement of the relevant litter legislation. The consultation exercise will be invaluable in assisting in identifying where the specific areas of concern are in each task force area. These areas will be different in their composition regarding populations, housing types and numbers of businesses etc. It will be quite likely, therefore, that local priorities will reflect the specific nature of each task force area. Implementation of each task force area will take approximately 12 weeks from the time the task force manager is appointed to when the area has been fully converted."
Prior to demolition (and possible redeveloment), consultants will draw up plans of how to remove any dangerous substances that may be in the fabric of the building or in the ground. Main concern is over asbestos. Pilrig Residents Association has been assured that local people will be kept informed.
Apparently more than 25,000 vehicles use this busy road every day. This has prompted the Council to instal an Air Quality Assessment Station in Shrubhill for one year from 1 August 2000. Apparently, the main substance they will be looking for is Nitrogen Dioxide from vehicle emissions.
