Chronological list of all current and
archived news items concerning Pilrig. Local diary dates are archived at the end.
- 11/7: Wimpey have intimated to the
Reporter's Unit that they intend to appeal the council's
decisions on their recent planning and listed building
consent applications for Shrub Place.
They have also requested that all their outstanding
appeals should be determined at a joint inquiry, which
"is unlikely to take place this year". Any
party to a planning application or appeal will have the
opportunity to be heard at a public inquiry (Contact Gerry.Nugent@scotland.gsi.gov.uk)
- 11/7: Pilrig Residents Association
submits objection to Water of Leith Flood Protection
Order. The proposed scheme is estimated to cost £40m
(and rising) and there are too many unanswered questions (more)
- 10/7: a further meeting between Pilrig
Residents Association/Friends of Pilirg Park and the
council's playground decided on refinement of previous
draft for a new playground near Pilrig

- 26/6: Powderhall waste depot
will be shut down for a considerable period to allow
extensive repairs including asbestos removal (at a cost

proposed method of removal and disposal (incl transport)
and details of involvement of HSE and SEPA.

his new website.
- 28/5: Wimpey's Shrub Place
proposal unanimously rejected by Council Planning
Committee (more)

residential development @ Broughton Road (formerly Brown
Brother's) (more)

- 2/5: Yesterday's local election resulted
in a slightly reduced Labour majority on the City of
Edinburgh Council, with 30 councillors (down from 31).
Liberal Democrats won 15 seats (up one) and the
Conservatives 13 (up one). (full details for three wards
covering Pilrig)
- 1/5: Professional thieves have caused
more than £1000 worth of damage to the roof of the Edinburgh
Masonic Club in Shrub Lane. The crooks have been
using the city club to gain access to lead roofing on the
abandoned Shrub Place bus depot next door. (more)
- 11/4: Wimpey's latest application is
likely to be presented to the (by then freshly elected)
Planning Committee sometime before 10 June. It is not
clear at this stage whether objectors will be able to
present their case to the planning councillors. (Shrub Place campaign pages)
- 26/3: a well-attended AGM of
Pilrig Residents Association was held in Pilrig
St Paul's Church Hall attended by one of our local
councillors, Trevor Davies. The meeting focussed on
traffic issues and discussed other live local issues. A
new committee was elected.
- 26/3: an explanation (?) on why the Pilrig Park
playgrounds have not been renewed despite
repeated Council promises since 1998 (!) was received.
- 12/3: Shrub Place planning appeal
by Wimpey is "being held in abeyance
pending the outcome of further planning
applications" at the request of Wimpey and with
agreement of City Council (Shrub Place campaign pages)
- 11/3: Pilrig Park playgrounds refurbishment
- promised by Councillors and officials every year since
1998 - will not start in this financial year either.
However, consultations on design and location details
will finally take place in April 2003. If you would like
to take part or make suggestions, please let us know.
Contact pilrig.playground@PilrigRA.cjb.net
- 3/3: Central Edinburgh Traffic
Management Hearing heard Pilrig Residents
Association's presentation concerning increased levels of
traffic in Leith Walk, Pilrig Street, Broughton Road. (more)

a Number 10 bus in Leith Walk, injuring
one man and leaving rips some 15 feet long on front and
side of the upper deck. The truck was being operated for
a nearby five-storey
residential development.
(full story)
- 11/2: Wimpey lodges appeal against
Council decision to refuse planning permission for their Shrub
Place application of last August. There will be
a public inquiry later this year conducted by SEIRU.
- 31/1: objection to latest Shrub
Place proposals have been lodged with planning

Wardens Division reports that they have followed
up on problems with refuse sacks left by tourist coaches
in Pilrig Street over Hogmanay.
- 28/11: eagerly awaited Council Design
Brief intended to guide future development at Shrub
Place, Shrub Place Lane and Shrub Hill is due to
be published at the end of November (more)
- 27/11: planning applications for 95
and 99 McDonald Road are currenty live; although
outside Pilrig, these developments face across the
railway line and will impact on Pilrig vistas; more
information and Pilrig Residents Association comments available.
- 18/11: Consultants have been engaged by TIEdinburgh
to progress the submission to the Scottish Executive and
the Parliamentary Bill for Tram Line 1 -
The Northern Loop.
Mott MacDonald are currently looking at the engineering
options and modeling forecasts with the intention of
establishing a preferred route. Statutory consultation
has commenced and the current programme is to go to
public consultation in the summer of 2003.
- 4/10: Wimpey in fresh talks with Council.
Shrub Place campaigners will also meet
with Council planners on 17 October to discuss masterplan
for the site.
- 1/10: a report has confirmed concerns that were
first expressed in the Pilrig Residents Association's
comments on the
proposed congestion charging scheme: the
north of the city would suffer as a result and expensive
"mitigation measures", such as traffic calming,
would be needed to offset that.
- 1/10: the pedestrian crossing
near junction Pilrig Street/Dryden Street remains
incomplete and is regularly blocked by parked vehicles.
As this crossing facilitates routes to several local
schools, and with the darker season approaching, this is
highly unsatisfactory. If you feel strongly about this,
write to the Director of
City Development
and your local councillor (north of
Pilrig Street, south of
Pilrig Street).
- 27/9: Scottish Parliament invites
comments on DOG FOULING
(SCOTLAND) BILL.
The Bill has two principal aims. The first of these is to
amend the offence of dog fouling so that
the offence consists of failing to clear up after a dog
rather than of allowing a dog to foul. The second
principal aim is to establish new enforcement provisions
in connection with the offence by enabling local
authorities and police constables to issue fixed penalty
notices to persons suspected of committing the
offence.Comments by 27 September 2002 to its Local Government Committee (local.government@scottish.parliament.uk)
- 24/9: the Old Town Housing Association
reports that they had only two issues raised with them in
connection with 2-4 Dryden Street during
the last month. Both have been responded to - they
believe - to the people's satisfaction. They have
followed up their contact with the community policeman
and the local manager has had inital conversations with
the immediate neighbours. They are installing a CCTV
camera at the front door to monitor the area from the
door to the gate so that they can follow up on any
incidents
that may happen in that area. They are still trying to
arrange a follow up public meeting, probably not on 30
September, as previously advised (contact: Old Town Housing Association)
- 24/9: Pilrig Residents Association has
objected to the proposed conversion of the former
commercial laundry shop at the corner Balfour
Street/Arthur Street into a flat.
- 19/9: following objections by the Pilrig
Residents Association against a proposed 1m satellite
dish at the side of the recently refurbished former
Co-op building (370 Leith Walk), the
application was withdrawn.
- 11/9: Mark Lazarowicz, MP for our area,
has launched a campaign (and petition) for greater regulation
of fireworks (contact:
lazarowiczm@parliament.uk)
- 6/9: campaigners against Wimpey's Shrub
Place development met in the Shaw's Colonies to celebrate
- over a few beers - the famous victory over bad design
on 14 August, and to thank Councillor Trevor Davies who
has been instrumental in convincing fellow councillors on
the planning committee to vote against the Planning
Department's recommendation to accept Wimpey's mediocre
proposals.
- 4/9: complaints about traffic and
parking in the vicinity of the new building on the site
of the old Egg Grading Station (Arthur Street
Lane) and around the Citroen Garage reach us. To
help us investigate and improve the situation, please let
us know, if you have had similar or related problems at
the same location (contact:
traffic.ArthurStreet@PilrigRA.cjb.net).
- 26/8: public meeting, chaired by MSP
Malcolm Chisholm, about problems experienced by
neighbours of Old Town Housing Association's
supported flats in Dryden Street resolves to
redouble efforts to make it work for everybody -
monitoring meeting to take place on 30 September (contact: Old Town Housing Association)
- 25/8: Pilrig Reporter Summer
2002 issue available online
- 14/8: famous victory for Shrub
Place Campaign: Wimpey's inappropriate proposals
for Shrub Place (Leith Walk) have been binned by the
Council's Development Quality Sub-Committee (more)
- 13/8: Reports on Wimpey's activities elsewhere
in Edinburgh and Scotland emerge which are less than
flattering
- 10/7: Pilrig Residents Association to
object to Wimpey's "revised" scheme. Shrub
Place Campaign to be re-launched.

Shrub Place. Deadline for comments and objections is 15
July. (see campaign info for details of our previous objections)
- 24/6: Pilrig Street to get unified
wheelie-bin uplift from Friday, 29 June 2002 (more)

community. Currently, the organization is looking for new
voluntary projects to promote around the student
population. Contact Rachael Caunt 0131 650 2570 or e-mail
cldo@holyrood.ed.ac.uk.
- 7/5/02: Superintendent Grieve of Lothian
& Borders Police has compiled statistics of serious
road accidents (up 4.7% for adults and 20% for kids) and

Leith

Association's response to Scottish Executive's
Consultation on Getting involved in Planning.
- 28/4/02: Local MSP Malcolm Chisholm
"strongly supports" our proposals for 20mph in Pilrig.
- 23/4/02: do you think a skatepark in Pilrig Park or elsewhere in Pilrig and
Edinburgh is a good idea? If so, contact Margaret Westwood with your views and name,
telephone number and postcode.
- 20/4/02: following objections by Pilrig
Residents Association, a planning application for a
mobile phone mast and equipment cabin on Leith Walk (on
gap site at Croall Place) was refused
- 18/4/02: discussions between Wimpey and
Planning Department have taken place in February and
March; revised plans by Wimpey, we understand, seem to
address some of our key concerns: lower height; street
instead of alien pend; fewer units (cf campaign info).
- 15/4/02: both Lorne Community Council and
New Town Broughton Pilrig Community Council are holding
elections in near future. All residents are eligible to
stand. More info and nomination papers available from David Guest (NTBP CC) and Roland Reid (Lorne CC).
- 1/4/02: The public inquiry into the North
East Edinburgh Plan Review took place in March and will report at the
end of April.
- 20/3/02: Pilrig Residents Association's response to Scottish Executive's Consultation on Utilities
and Roadworks submitted. Contains appendix on
current regulations.
- 20/2/02: Environmental Wardens targeted Pilrig Park
for two hours this morning and issued one on-the-spot
fine (£25) for dog fouling. Apparently that is very
little, compared with other similar parks in Edinburgh.
- 15/2/02: New link to Edinburgh Contemporary Architecture

for Shrub Place in present form in close vote

- 23/10/01:
Following suggestions by the
Pilrig Residents Association and Lorne Community Council,
new and we understand, more pedestrian-friendly phases
will be introduced at Pilrig Street/Leith Walk pelican
crossing.
- 23/10/01:

implement planning conditions suggested by Pilrig

Brown Brothers site are currently underway: puffin
pedestrian crossing, blisters, drop kerbs. More
information from the Council's transport department (Ian Mathie)
- 12/10/01: Trevor Davies (Labour) was elected as
councillor for Broughton in yesterday's by-election.
Congratulations! For full results click
here.
- 12/10/01: Transport fact: 47% of households in the
four Scottish cities do not have a car available for
private use (source: 2000 Scottish Household Survey).

should? - flow from that.
