AIMS AND BACKGROUND

Pilrig Residents Association was founded in September 1998 to establish lines of communication between Pilrig's 1200 private households and the various public services dealing with local issues and having an impact on the quality of life in our area, including the City of Edinburgh Council, police and fire brigade, bus and utility companies. Where appropriate, the Association is also entering into dialogue with private and voluntary sector developers active in Pilrig and its periphery.

At the inaugural meeting a Constitution was adopted and a Committee elected.

The Association is an independent voluntary organisation, non-party political, and has no staff. The Association is represented on Lorne Community Council and on New Town Broughton and Pilrig Community Council.

Our main aim is to promote and represent effectively the area’s interests.

Open to everyone living in the Pilrig area.

KEY ISSUES

• Pilrig Master Plan: including rational approach to piecemeal development along railway corridor and other major sites and to tackle fundamental throughout the area problems in a comprehensive way
• Traffic slowing: traffic light controlled pedestrian crossing/s, at junction Dryden Street/Pilrig Street and other side streets;
  signage (20mph; slow - children/park)
• Pedestrians: easier and safer crossing points in Pilrig Street - pavement blisters with drop kerbs (example Albert Street); improved pedestrian sequence at Pilrig Street/Leith Walk
• Cycling: crossing from Dryden Street to Cambridge Avenue; red lane treatment at Pilrig Street/Leith Walk junction; improved access to rail bridge at end of Dryden Street
• Litter: better enforcement of street cleaning and logging of problems
• Information sharing: newsletter with local news and logging of problems and responses from Council
• Pilrig Park: dog fouling; play parks

Our attitude to public services

• We look for outcomes that matter; we don't want knee-jerk measures that react to short-term pressures.
• We want public services that meet the needs of citizens, not the convenience of service providers.
• We want efficient, high quality public services; there should be no room for mediocrity.
• We want public services to use new technology to meet the needs of citizens and not trail behind technological developments.
• We value public service where they meet the above criteria.
