This is
me - Pat Porter - sitting on a rock on the Channel Island
of Guernsey! I was born and have lived all my life in this lovely county of Suffolk on the East Coast of England. I`ve been involved with crafts all my life, but after a stroke six years ago, took up cross stitching on the advice of my daughter, as I badly needed something that I could do using only one hand. Not being able to find the designs I really wanted to do, I began to design my own charts from photos my husband and I took of the countryside and picturesque old villages which abound in this area. Most of them are demonstrated here for your pleasure. Even if you do not want to buy a chart I hope you will enjoy them for their own sake. My husband coming from Devon, I have some West Country designs "in the pipe-line", so I hope you`ll visit this site again! Suffolk Millenium Sampler -although not strictly a sampler, perhaps more of a collage, is made up from many of my larger designs, (see them on the "Gallery" page) cut down to size, plus new ones - the Tidemill at Woodbridge, the "House in the Clouds" at Thorpeness, Orford Castle, built in around 1160 by Henry II, and Rose Cottage at Stonham. Also included are two of our rare breeds, the Suffolk Punch from a photograph of unbeaten ChampionSuffolk Stallion, Rowhedge Count, sadly killed by lightning a few years ago, The Large Black Suffolk Pig (take it from me they`re BIG!) and the far from rare Suffolk Black faced Sheep. A Redpoll Cow should be included, but I couldn`t fit one in! A full size, much more detailed version of Rowhedge Count is on the drawing-board. The central motif is surrounded by a border of clematis, which festoons our hedges in early summer. 208 stitches by 270 |

St.
Martin`s Church, Trimley St. Martin - built around the early 15th
century, much vandalised by Oliver Cromwell, and later
restored - the tower being rebuilt within the last 100
years - hence the low height, and the contrasting top. It
stands in the same churchyard as it`s "sister"
church, St, Mary`s. The local legend is that the
"twin churches" were built by two feuding
sisters! A cottage nearby was where the last case of
plague was recorded in England, early last century. 186 stitches by 186 |

Southwold
Lighthouse is
unusual, sited as it is behind some old flower-covered
cottages, and the Sole Bay Inn. It looks out over the
green to Sole Bay where the last great sea-battle against
the Dutch was fought. Souhwold itself is an enchanting
little town with many old buildings, and a plerthora of
fascinating Antique and Curio shops. The wellknown local
Suffolk brewery is situated in the town, and local
deliveries are made by horse-drawn brewers drays, pulled
by impressive Percherons. There will shortly be two
partners for this quite tall design, of a windmill, and
"The House in the Clouds" which is an unusual
watertower with a house perched right on the top - a
strange sight as you drive through the leafy lanes. 120 stitches by 212 |

Borley
Church
just on the Essex side of the Suffolk/Essex border, is
famous for it`s association with it`s Rectory (burned
down in 1937) BORLEY RECTORY - "The Most Haunted
House in England". When I was taking the photograph
I didn`t realise how recently the ghost of a nun was seen
wandering through those watchful, ancient yew trees!
Inside the church is a wonderful old tomb of the
Waldegrave family. 197 stitches by 240 |
