This year the Driffield Light Opera decided to perform Half a Sixpence and the show was excellent. This page can not do justice to all the hard work that was put in by all of the society.

Arthur Kipps was a twenty one year old orphan working in Shalfords drapers shop, Folkestone. In 1901 society was rather different to today, the divide between rich and poor was huge. Kipps and his friends were working for very meager wages, with no security and had very little chance of getting any further in life.

Ann Pornick is Kipp's childhood sweetheart and because they don't have much opportunity to spend time together Kipps gives her a token of his love, half a sixpence, so theat they will be reminded of each other when apart.

An excitable actor, Chitterlow bumps into Kipps and informs him that he is about to inherit a large legacy. He takes Kipps of down to the pub and introduces him to a new experience.

After the evening in the pub Kipps is rather the worse for wear and is forced to go to a night class run by Helen Walsingham rather than meeting Ann as planned.

The following morning Chitterlow confirms the news of the inheritance and Kipps faints. He resigns from Shalfords just before he is dismissed and begins his new life.

He quickly forgets Anne and falls in love with Helen Walsingham whos brother looks after his investments. Anne tries without a great deal of success to teach him how to dress and behave.
The Ball   Reunited
 
After a disasterous ball, Arthur and Ann are reunited and decide to get maried. Arthur is rather keener on the grand life than Ann and they start off with a sumptuous weeding follwed by the wedding photos.

Helens brother managed to loose all of Kipps money, leaving him with just enough to runn a book shop.

One of Kipps' investments however was in Chitterlows play, which becomes a huge success. chitterlow breaks the news in a delighful alcohol induced haze.

..but is does solve their money problems and make bringing up their family easier.
