Me at Radio Hinchingbrooke

I’ve been presenting radio shows on and off since 1993 when I was at university, sharing a house with Alan & Kev, presenters of the sports show on award winning student radio station, University Radio Nottingham.  It looked like a laugh, so I scraped together a demo tape and the rest is history, albeit a very specialised branch of it.  I’ve still got the demo tape somewhere, and in all honesty it’s awful.

I was with URN for over a year, during which we took part in 2 RSL’s (restricted service license) broadcasting across Nottingham.  It’s just possible that someone may remember my rock show ‘One Louder’, and my insistence on playing the Atom Seed to death.  I was also a regular presenter on PM Tension, the wild and wacky (or so our schedule would have you believe) afternoon show.  I also had a shot at the Late Breakfast, After Hours, the late night request show, and on one memorable occasion the Breakfast Show, which was an hour shorter than normal due to my oversleeping.

On top of that I also helped out with a few outside broadcasts, and as a result I was present for the classic moment when a fellow presenter, who shall be known only as Alex, marched into Kingmakers dressing room, thrust a microphone at the nearest person and started interviewing them.  Unfortunately the interviewee was not in fact a member of Kingmaker, but some bloke who had wandered in to get his T-shirt signed.  Sadly, the tape of the incident has disappeared, although Alex’s other legendary cock-ups are in the audio section, along with some of mine.

Inexplicably, I wasn’t offered a job at the BBC after leaving university, so I left radio, vowing to return when I could be bothered.  I finally got around to joining Hospital Radio Hinchingbrooke about a year and a half ago.  Since then I’ve been presenting ‘Blurring Boundaries’ (apologies to Jason Mansfield for ripping off the title) every Monday night.  The show is allegedly fairly mainstream indie and alternative stuff, although I do occasionally let myself get carried away for the ‘Anorak Challenge’.  I’m proud to say that after 18 months I have yet to play any Oasis.  If you want to get an idea of what I play there’s a playlist for a recent show here.  If you want to know more about Radio Hinchingbrooke, then visit our semi-official site, run by Tim Wass.

That’s about it for now.  If you fancy hearing a few jingles or samples from my shows check the audio section.  There are also a few photographs of Radio Hinchingbrooke presenters taken during our recent Radioathlon, when 13 presenters broadcast for 72 hours, to 3 listeners.  If you want to know more about Hospital Radio in general, or would like to join your local station, then a couple of good places to start looking are www.hospitalradio.co.uk or the uk.media.radio.hospital newsgroup.
