2nd Generation - Peter NEWTON (1651-1731?)

Peter was baptised 21 December 1651 in Branscombe, the son of Peter & Joan

On the 26 November 1677 in Branscombe, Peter, who was at this time about 26 years old, married a local girl, Elizabeth BARTLETT. She had been baptised in 1653, also in Branscombe and was the daughter of Edward BARTLETT and Sarah.

The BARTLETT family were the most numerous in the village at this time, and one of the branches were also the local gentry.

Peter & Elizabeth had six children, all sons:
1. Peter baptised 7 February 1678/9, Branscombe, buried 27 April 1679, Branscombe.
2. Roger baptised 8 May 1680, Branscombe.
3. William baptised 27 March 1683, Branscombe, buried 15 April 1683, Branscombe.
4. a son born 1686, Branscombe, buried 6 October 1686, Branscombe.
5. Peter baptised 11 February 1688/9, Branscombe, buried 12 April 1691, Branscombe.
6. Samuel baptised 29 March 1692, Branscombe, Devon.

Of their six sons, all but two died as infants. The first child, named Peter as his father, was buried in April 1679, only two and a half months after his baptism. The third son, William, died less than one month after his baptism in 1683. The next son was buried before he had even been given a name, this was in October 1683. Peter was also the name of the fifth son and as he survived his first year his parents must have thought that, at last, another son was going to survive, but unfortunately he also died when aged two. So, this was their third consecutive son to die and four out of the five. Happily, their final child Samuel did survive, and it is his offspring that we follow to our present generation.

Joan died in 1723, aged about 70, and was buried 15 September 1723 in Branscombe.

Peter died in 1731?, when he would have been about 80 years old, and was also buried in Branscombe, on Boxing Day 1731.
