3rd Generation - Samuel NEWTON (1692-1768?)

Samuel was baptised 29 March 1692, in Branscombe, the youngest son of Peter NEWTON & Elizabeth BARTLETT.

He married Margaret (surname unknown) probably after 1711, but definitely before 1718, the year of baptism of their first son. The marriage did not occur in Branscombe church, as it is not recorded in the parish registers, and as yet the date and location of the event has still to be ascertained.

Nothing at all is known about Margaret. She may have been a Branscombe girl, but a strong possibility is that she was from another parish. If this is the case, then the marriage could have been conducted in this other parish, and the couple then lived in Samuel's village, Branscombe. It was quite common to marry in the home parish of the bride, and then live in the parish of settlement of the groom.

As mentioned previously, Samuel was of a family of boys only, and he and Margaret also were to have sons only:
1. William baptised 29 June 1718, Branscombe.
2. Samuel baptised 30 July 1721, Branscombe.
3. Roger baptised 3 April 1727, Branscombe.

Little else is known of the couples lives. They were both to end their days in Branscombe, Margaret dying in 1742, buried 27 May 1742, and Samuel followed in 1768?, aged about 76, and was buried 10 January 1768, also in Branscombe churchyard.
