6th Generation - Samuel NEWTON (1772-?)

Samuel, the middle of five children of James NEWTON & Martha TILLMAN, was baptised 12 January 1772, Branscombe.

On 9 November 1795, at the age of 23, he married Elizabeth NOAK, who was four years older at 27. Elizabeth's condition at this time would, without doubt, not have gone unnoticed by the recently appointed vicar, Thomas PUDDICOMBE, when he performed the service, as only three weeks later, John Noke NEWTON, their firstborn was to arrive. The witnesses to the marriage were Martha NOAK & John NOAK, probably Elizabeth's older siblings and Mary NEWTON, who was more than likely Samuel's younger sister.

Elizabeth and her family were not local to Branscombe, she had been baptised in the Dorsetshire village of Long Burton, 6 April 1768, the daughter of Israel NOAK and Martha DERRIMAN. Although not from the village it is likely that this is where the couple first met as at the time of the marriage her father, Israel, was living in the parish at Hole Farm, a tenant farmer of Johnathon STUCKEY Esq.

Children of Samuel & Elizabeth:
1. John Noke born 1 December 1795, Branscombe, baptised 7 February 1796, Branscombe.
2. James born 11 March 1797, Branscombe, baptised 20 March 1797, Branscombe.
3. Isaac baptised 9 June 1799, Broadwey.
4. William baptised 18 January 1801, Broadwey.
5. Elizabeth baptised 24 October 1802, Broadwey.
6. Israel.7. Patience baptised 14 September 1806, Broadwey. Died in infancy.

After the baptism of their second son James, in 1797, Samuel & Elizabeth moved east, along the coast, to the village of Broadwey, near Weymouth, in the neighbouring county of Dorset. This was a move of 30 miles, and a possible reason for the relocation may have been because Elizabeth's family lived in the area (her younger sister married in the parish in 1821).

When the family moved to Broadwey, c.1798, it may be that John, the eldest son, remained in Branscombe, possibly with his grandparents or an uncle or aunt. Although, he would only have been about three years old at the time, the reason for this thinking is that he married in Branscombe in 1827 and raised his family there.

Samuel & Elizabeth had a further five children in Broadwey. The yougest of these was a girl named Patience who was baptised on 14 September 1806. It would seem that her birth may have had complications as Elizabeth, her mother, died shortly after on 26 September, aged 38. Patience also died in infancy.

At the time of his wife's death in 1806, Samuel was still only 35 years old and left with six or seven children under the age of 11 in his care. It may have been at this time that the eldest son returned to Branscombe to live, to ease the lot of his father.

What happened to Samuel from this point on has yet to be determined. He may have remarried or moved, or both.
