By 1881, when he was 19 years old, Robert was working as a wheelwright. The following year he was described as a carpenter when he married.

This marriage was on 22 July 1882, in St.Michael's church, Beer, to Emma MUTTER. Emma described herself as a 20 year old dressmaker, although, in fact she was only 19 having been born in Beer 17 April 1863, the daughter of Abraham MUTTER and Mary ABBOTT.

Robert & Emma had 10 children, all of whom survived to adulthood:
1. Mabel "Minnie" born 15 January 1883, Beer.
2. Elizabeth Jane born 17 February 1885, Beer.

9. Gwendoline Emma born 13 February 1907, Beer.
10. Kathleen Hilda born 16 May 1910, Beer.

The first two or three children were born while the family were living in a cottage which stood behind Lion Villa, they then moved across the street to live in the cottage called Spring Gardens where the remainder of the children, and some of following generations, were born. They were now living next door to Emma's parents and possibly the house where Emma had been born.

Robert started the family carpentry business along with his older brother William. Although, at some later time William was not thought to be pulling his weight, therefore, Robert carried on the business on his own. The original workshop was at the back of Spring Gardens, where Robert & his family lived, and later moved to the workshop buildings on the opposite side of the Causeway. The venture was starting to progress, and a hot water system had just been installed in the cottage, when Robert was taken ill and later died.
