7th Generation - John Noke NEWTON (1795-1846)

John Noke NEWTON was born 1 December 1795, in Branscombe, and baptised the following year on 7 February, at the parish church. He was the eldest child of Samuel NEWTON and his wife Elizabeth NOAK. His baptism entry only records his Christian name as 'John', but in his marriage entry in 1827 this had been added to and he was now known as 'John Noke', obviously named after his mother although the spelling was erroneous!

He was married on 8 July 1827, at the age of 27, in Branscombe, to 24 year old Mary PIKE. Mary had also been born in Branscombe on 21 June 1803, and baptised 10 July 1803, the daughter of James PIKE and Jane LEYCOTT.

Children:
1. Elizabeth Noke born c.1827, Hooknell, Branscombe, baptised 16 September 1827, Branscombe.
2. Isaac William born c.1829, Sellerswood, Branscombe, baptised 19 April 1829, Branscombe.
3. James Samuel born c.1833, Sellerswood, Branscombe, baptised 21 April 1833, Branscombe.
4. Israel John Noke born c.1834, Sellerswood, Branscombe, baptised 9 November 1834, Branscombe.
5. Sarah Jane born c.1837, Vicarage, Branscombe, baptised 26 February 1837, Branscombe.
6. George Henry David? born c.1839, Millers, Branscombe, baptised 30 June 1839, Branscombe.
7. Robert Peter born 11 November 1841, Millers, Branscombe, baptised 25 December 1841, Branscombe.
8. Martha born c.1844, Millers, Branscombe, baptised 22 September 1844, Branscombe, buried 7 June 1857, Branscombe.

The first child of John & Mary was baptised only two months after their marriage, and was also given 'Noke' as a Christian name. This child was Elizabeth Noke. One of her younger brothers was also given the surname of their grandmother as a Christian name, this being Israel John Noke.

In the baptism entries for all of their eight children a place of abode for the family was given. Using this information and that of the census returns, it is possible to trace the whereabouts of the family in the parish from the time of their marriage until the deaths of John and Mary. After the marriage in 1827 they first lived at Hooknell, which is where John's grandparents, James & Martha NEWTON, were living at their deaths only four or five years previously. Two years later, in 1829, the family had moved across the valley to Sellerswood in the east of the parish. They lived here for over five years, but by 1837 had moved again to the Vicarage area of the village. By the time of the baptism of their sixth child in 1839 they had once more relocated, this time to Millers, mile Eastwards. They were still here when John died on 13 May 1846, buried 17 May 1846, Branscombe. Mary remained here for at least a further 15 years, but by the time of her death on 4 July 1866 she had moved back to Vicarage where she was living with four of her children, she was buried 8 July 1866, at St. Winifred's.

Throughout his life John was employed as an agricultural labourer, and as would be thought for someone in this occupation was quite poor, for after his death his widow Mary was described as a pauper in the census returns of 1851 & 1861.
