Bienville

The French flag

Jean Baptiste Le-Moyne, Sieur de Bienville was appointed governor of Louisiana by King Louis XIV of France in 1701 and founded the present day Mobile in 1711.

He was fluent speaker of the Alabama tribes language and made many friends among them when he visited their towns in 1714. He also gained the Creeks permission to build Fort Toulouse in the heart of the Upper Creek territory and visited the thriving communities of the Lower Creek territories.

Yet despite his efforts the French were never able to bring the proudly independent Creek under their influence.
