When Columbus first discovered America it was not, as many people seem to believe, an untamed wilderness waiting to be conquered. It was a rich and culturally diverse land of peoples uniquely adapted to their environment. Not a land untouched by the hand of man, but one where he had learned to live in relative harmony with it.

A vast continent of over 500 tribal nations, each with their own unique, rich heritage and ancestry. Hunters, fishers and artisans intimately tied to the land by a complex web of social, cultural and spiritual bonds. Often linked together over vast distances by sophisticated, well-established patterns of inter-tribal trade and commerce.

This site then is not about the Hollywood stereotype of cowboys and indians, the redskin and the paleface (Although you may well find the historical origins of such terms on these pages). Nor is it a romanticised tribute to the 'noble savage' who once rode the plains in search of buffalo. It is about what today would be termed 'ethnic cleansing', but it is also about acts of great courage and bravery as well as great cruelty.

But above all else it is about the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity, because the modern day descendants of these tribes continue to struggle for the justice and recognition they so richly deserve. And as long as their name is spoken they will not be forgotten...
