G. H. I.
Ga’Natop : Ancient king of the Dotchra-Kyth
Gathra-mek : Lancasian berserker troops
Ghrau : One of the most northern of the cities of the Young Lands, Ghrau stands in the middle of the Plains of Ung Plith. Its people are descended from one of the nomadic tribes of the region who settled down in a rich fertile valley and founded the first permanent settlement on what is now the site of Ghrau. By 958 a small city had been built and since then it has changed little. The farmlands around Ghrau have gradually extended, however, until more Ghrau people live outside the city than within. The city itself is small but elegant behind a stout facade of red-stone walls with squat round towers spaced equally around them. Inside the streets are narrow and the houses low and solid with thick walls and heavy shale roofs. Being sited so far north the city suffers from cold winters and snow and therefore the streets are slightly wider than those found in cities further south and the pitch of the roofs much steeper. The Ghrau, despite having settled nearly 500 years ago still hold many of their nomadic beliefs and still have an hereditary chieftain. Until Ghrau was conquered by the Tivu and made part of their empire in 1287 these chiefs lived in a the small palace situated in the northernmost tip of the city. Since 1287 the chief has journeyed to Khal Tivori to serve at the court of the Tivu king and the city is run by a regent who rules over the tribal court in the chieftain’s name.
Grassmere : Major Bren Garno’s adjutant in the Free Region Fort. A short, stocky former quartermaster who Garno had seen as being almost as insistent on procedure as himself. Did not take part in any active fighting in the fort as Garno sent him back to Tynash with all the fort’s papers.
Great Ice Plains : The whole north-western tip of the Young Lands lies buried beneath a permanent covering of snow and ice. It is a desolate, barren land inhabited only by five primitive warring tribes of nomads who eke short, hard lives from the unrelenting landscape. The men of these tribes are cruel and callous and worship gods that demand sacrifice and blood. The strongest of the five tribes are the Gri-ak-Nar who under their chief, Urkban Drall, united the other four together and swept south in 1404 laying waste to Ung Plith and Krothé before being halted. The other tribes are:n Eka-an-Tekn Han-fë-Ottran Kregra-në-Forn Unga-ita-Bal
Grim Reapers : The name of a group of mercenaries led by Dohzan Paydor who stumble upon the secret of the Black Keep while escaping from Kar Tormian soldiers. Now only numbering thirty there were once a whole company of them and they fought in many of the larger battles of the time.
Groder : A fiery spirit brewed from herbs by several of the inns in Maygda
Gronzar : Captain of a company of skirmishers in the Battle of the Peaceful Pig
Ha’Nasor : Dotchra-Kyth name for Dysantra
Hagarn : The innkeeper at ‘The Pickled Frog’. A small, rotund man who usually wears leather overalls. Noted for his rebellious nature and his a deep but mellow voice.
Hai-Toko : Elder of the People of the Purple Blossom
Hardo : A member of the Grim Reapers who meets a sticky end in the Black Keep.
Hareb : One of Isobella’s uncles servant
Hazaria : Empire to the south of the Young Lands
Hazarian Desert : A vast region of strange rock formations, sand seas with roving lines of dunes, endless gravel, dusty plains and dry, lifeless mountains. It forms a natural barrier between the cities of the north and the vast Hazarian Empire to the south. Few people live in the desert and only two trade routes pass across it - one from Clos Reyniere and the other from Lanca.
Hazarian Empire : Little is known of the Hazarian Empire other than it is warlike, ancient, and ruled from the city of Hazaria. Tass Harmon visited there following his return from searching for the Eye of Humos and rescued the King’s son, Be-Na-Baye. He was chased from the city after being caught in bed with the King’s favourite concubine - A-Nubra. The northernmost boundary of the empire is the Hazarian Desert but how far south it extends is a subject of much speculation. Those that have visited the empire return with tales of bountiful wealth, splendour and cleanliness. The Tynasians were defeated by the Hazarians in 287 when Hazaria came to the aid of Lanca which Tynash had under siege. The following year the Tynasians tried to invade Hazaria but were defeated. In 1206 under the misguided rule of the Arch-Magus Tynash invaded Hazaria again only to be defeated at Kosath. Four years later the Hazarians launched their own attack and were narrowly defeated by a joint Tynasian, Munx, Graythe and Valcarian force. The final battle between the two empires came in 1255 when the Hazarians reached the fortress of Azan Kath before being defeated. This was the last great Tynasian victory before her empire fell and her large armies were disbanded.
Head : Mummified remains of a powerful Inthican magician
Herem Zarr : Isobella’s uncle.
Holben Watts : Stable owner in Maygda
Horsath : City of Healers
Hortop : Zuq’s assigned liaison during his stay in Lanca
Hubere Roganoth : Tynasian Merchant. Roganoth was a man of medium height with unassuming features and a rotundness about him brought about by years of prosperity and soft living. He sported a long forked beard that had once been grey but now was more of a silver colour and a shoulder length mane of similar coloured hair. Even though he was close to sixty years old there was not a thinning patch on his head and he put this down to always keeping his head covered in the sun. Hubere was rich, possibly the richest of the multitude of merchants who made their home in Tynash and the majority of his money came from wine. At an early age he had realised that here was a commodity that would never drop out of favour, and had established himself as an aggressive, sometimes ruthless, trader. Despite this he was highly respected in the merchant fraternity and had been head of the Merchants Guild for the past twelve years. With the money he made from trading wine between Tynash and the neighbouring cities Hubere had been able to buy a large mansion in the centre of the Merchants’ Quarter of the city, hidden behind high stone walls, and with only one quite plain entranceway. Few except Roganoth’s social circle knew the grandeur that the high walls hid, and because of this Roganoth had never been robbed. This might be partly explained by the fact that he was a fully paid up sponsor of the Guild of Thieves, and probably donated more to their families each year than the thieves could hope to steal from him.
Hugon : King Arntral’s first born son and heir to the throne of Clos Reyniere
Iathe : Lancasian priest in charge of Kara’s party
Ikrarian Mountains : Far to the north of the Great Ice Plains lies the isolated range of mountains known to the indigenous local nomadic tribesmen as Ikrar. Few people from the south have travelled into these desolate regions, the first almost certainly being Tyberus the Wanderer in 1514BF and Gron Zuq in the 1390’s. The mountains shrouded as they are by a permanent blanket of snow and ice, made this an ideal place for Jegar to finally halt when he carried the Orb of power north in 2425BF and somewhere in the mountain lies the ice fortress he built to protect both himself and the Orb until the chosen one was sent by King RuNne of Haine to re-forge the Sceptre of Power.
Ironfists : Member of the Company of Seven. A brawler but a natural wizard with ropes, splices, hitches and the like. Became a poacher at the age of eleven after his father was killed by brigands. He is therefore an expert survivalist and archer as well as being an adequate swordsman. He joined the Clos Reyniere army to avoid imprisonment and the chopping off of both his hands. A small, well liked man with soft blue eyes and a shock of curly black hair. Will not reveal his true name to anyone.
Izle Mountains : These tall inaccessible mountains form an impenetrable barrier around an alpine region of lakes and valleys. Hidden away in one of the more remote valleys close to Berana Bay is Tarr - the legendary weapon school which trained Cahrn Alvesüene and Synak.
Izrath : Luminous ore mined beneath the city of Dysantra.
