First contact is made. This is usually followed by a visit to the site; I like to see where the window will go as well as find out any potential problems - such as the glare of morning light shown below - and see the surroundings into which it must fit. A brief is established. |

First, there is usually some research to be done, which can be time-consuming and quite diverting and often throws up fascinating red herrings… |
|
For the Psalterlane window above, for example: The internet is useful for images and inspiration, but it can be a bit strange sometimes. I tell the search engine I want stars. It asks if I want gossip about Judy Garland, Madonna's style tips, to know where Cher shops. I try again and ask for NASA. Apart from some more sites that are remarkably like the Hollywood ones (particularly the "News on Hot Young Stars" - not quite as salacious as it sounds!), there's loads of good stuff - and I stumble across David Leckrone, Senior Project Scientist for Hubble Space, who sends me links to lots of the most fabulous images, and passes my request for information on to others. Soon my computer is stuffed with the most wonderful images of swirling clouds of stars. |

Others avenues to explore include what salt crystals look like (I contact the Salt Association and get a wonderful enthusiastic reply from them, with loads of suggestions to file for future work); what yeast looks like (Googling microscopic images of yeast, I discover there are dozens of different ones) and the shapes of seeds round the world. Little pieces of paper litter my drawing board with cryptic scribbles: "Glass effects - rainbows forgive - prisms - chandeliers - antiques?" I regularly come across little notes to myself which doubtless were profound insights 5 years ago, but now are completely unintelligible. Sometimes people give me images to incorporate which can present a challenge (a pink poodle in a church window springs to mind…) |
