Welcome to the Early Dance Circle website!

What is the Early Dance Circle?

The Early Dance Circle [EDC] was formed in 1984 as an umbrella organisation to promote the enjoyment, performance and study of Early Dance in the UK.  Now a registered charity (no. 1097746), its membership comprises individuals and groups throughout the UK and beyond.

The Circle’s recognised objects are to foster knowledge, understanding and appreciation of dance and its context in European society up to and including the twentieth century - and of its music and of other subjects in so far as they affect or are affected by Early Dance.

What is Early Dance?

Early Dance (or Historical Dance) is a term that covers the dances current in Western Europe, in courts and country houses, in taverns and theatres, from the Middle Ages  up to the end of the 20th century.   Information about these dances is derived from original and reliable secondary sources.

There are no age barriers in Early Dance:  everyone used to dance and everyone can do so today.

Fuller details on Early Dance are given in our information pack  - Dance through History
