Online 8th April 2000 - The 60th Anniversary

n  8th April 1940 The British destroyer HMS Glowworm, alone and outgunned  took on the German  Heavy Cruiser Admiral Von  Hipper and her destroyer escorts. In spite of the heavy odds against her she  managed to score hits on her mighty opponent and in a last act of defiance she  rammed the Cruiser before she sank.

This website is dedicated to the men of the Glowworm who fought and died for freedom  in those dark days. My great Uncle who was killed in the action was one of them.

Below: Artists Impression of Glowworm ramming the Hipper.
