Broad StreetEarly 20th Century
Looking down Broad St to its junction with the Bow (now Bow Street) before the demolitions of 1930s (centre of photo) and 1950s (right-hand side of photo). The only building still standing is the so-called Darnley house (tall building left of centre with three dormer windows in the attic.) The story that Lord Darnley lived there when he was out of favour with Mary Queen of Scots was put about by one of the Alexanders of Westerton at Bridge of Allan, who was born there. He wanted to have been born somewhere special, so he had the plaque fitted. Lord Darnley tended to love with Willie Bell, the towns treasurer, who lived and kept a public house further down the Bow. |
