Forth Freezes Over

1895

River Forth

River Forth (2)

During the early months of 1895 the whole of Scotland was held in the grip of a severe frost. One local effect here was that the River Forth was frozen over for a fortnight. For anyone who has not seen the River frozen over and can not visualize such a scene let it he said that another stretch of water frozen over that year was a major part of Loch Lomond. Our two photographs here show some of the residents on the ice at Cambuskenneth.

Note how helpful the Town Council was by providing the planks seen in one picture. This was to make it easier for the lieges to get onto the ice.

The 32 degrees of frost, which was what was recorded at one point, had frozen the Forth with three feet of ice.
