Old Stirling

The Illustrations

The Publishers must acknowledge their obligation to the following for the use of photographs illustrating the booklet:

To Mr. Ian G. Lindsay for the views of the Argyll Ludging, the Tolbooth, and Broad Street.

To Mr. George Hay for the views of the Palace and the Chapel Royal.

To Mr. Walter S. Scott for the views of Holy Rude, Cowane’s Hospital, Stirling Brig, St. Mary’s Wynd doorway, the Stevenson Ludging, and St. Ninians Steeple.

The view on the cover is reproduced from an aquatint by John Clark (1824) kindly made available by Dr. C. A. Malcolm of the Signet Library, Edinburgh. It shows the town from the north with the plain of the Forth valley, in the foreground. The curving course of the river and the four arches of the Old Brig are clearly indicated. Beyond the river, the burgh rises steeply on its ridge to the crowning eminence of the Castle.

The plans and diagrams were drawn by Mr. George Hay.
