Aberdeenshire and MorayAberdeen
Aberdeen, the Granite City is Scotlands third largest burgh. Built chiefly of granite, the town has varied industries, particularly oil, and is popular as a holiday resort. The beaches are sandy and there is a fine promenade two miles in length. Two rivers, the Don and the Dee, flank the city, whose Cathedral dedicated to St Machar was founded in 1136. The river Dee rises in the Cairngorms and flows in a generally easterly direction to enter the sea at Aberdeen. The coastal lowland extends north-east from Aberdeen to Fraserburgh and then westwards to the Moray Firth through the counties of Banff, Moray and Nairn, the coasts of which are studded with small former fishing ports. |
