EdinburghCalton Hill
It was Stevenson who pointed out that Calton Hill was the best place to view both the Castle and Arthurs Seat. The views also extend northwards, to the Firth of Forth and Fife, and to the site of the new Scottish Parliament at Holyrood. Among the monuments on the hill are those to Lord Nelson, who died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The stone signal-tower was designed to be tall enough to be seen by the shipping in Leith. It has its base 456 ft above sea-level and stands 106 ft high. In 1852 a time signal was installed at the top of the monument to enable captains of ships to set their chronometers accurately. A large time-ball drops at noon GMT on week-days. During the summer the lowering of the time-ball coincides with the firing of the one o'clock gun at 1 pm BST at Edinburgh Castle. Other monuments to Nelson include Nelcons Column in Trafalgar Square in London and the Nelson Monument on Cluny Hill, Forres. |
