EdinburghForth Road Bridge
The Firth of Forth is spanned by two great bridges. The older, the famous railway bridge, was built at the end of the nineteenth century and opened in 1890. The other bridge is the new Forth Road Bridge, a magnificent suspension bridge with a total length of about 6,000 feet. It provides twin carriageways, two footpaths and two cycle tracks, and has a minimum clearance above high water of 150 feet. The main cables from which the roadway is suspended are 26 inches in diameter. The bridge was opened in 1964, replacing the ferry which crossed the river from North to South Queensferry. |
