Dumfries

Nith Bridge

Dumfries was made a royal burgh in the twelfth century when William the Lion was king of Scotland and its oldest charter dates from 1395, but Dumfries owes its more recent fame to Robert Burns who loved here from 1791 until his death in 1796. His house is now a museum.

The old stone bridge over the River Nith was built in the thirteenth century by Devorguilla, the mother of John de Baliol, the founder of the Oxford college which bears his name. Six of the original arches remain and the bridge is still used by pedestrians.
