Dumfries and GallowayDunskey Castle Dunskey Castle was built in the sixteenth century and stands on a cliff looking across the North Channel to the Irish coast a mile south-east of Portpatrick. Before the regular ferry service between Stranraer and Larne was established in 1849, Portpatrick was the terminus of the mail steamers to Donagadee in Ireland, 21 miles away. According to legend, St Patrick accomplished the crossing with a single stride. |
