Glasgow, The Clyde and AyrshireGeorge Square
Glasgow grew up in the eighteenth century, when industry and commerce began to convert thetown described by Defoe as the most beautiful little city in Europe into the sprawling metropolis and seaport of the twentieth century. The centre of the city is George Square where the city chambers were built in the style of the Italian Renaissance in the nineteenth century. In front of them rises an 80 ft high column topped by a statue of Sir Walter Scott. |
