Strathfillan

To the west of Loch Achray lies Loch Voil and its continuation Loch Doyne. Readers of Sir Walter Scott are familiar with the exploits of the outlaw Rob Roy, but some may be surprised to know that the romantic legends surround a man who did in fact exist, and his grave may be found in the roofless old church at Balquhidder to the east of Loch Voil. Rob Roy MaeGregor died at Inverlochlaraig some miles beyond the western end of the loch. Strath Fillan meets Glen Dochart and Glen Falloch at Crianlarich, an important road and rail junction.

Three miles north-west of the town are the remains of St Fillan’s Priory, a fourteenth-century foundation, by the side of a pool the waters of which were said to cure madness. The chapel bell may be seen in the National Museum of Antiquities at Edinburgh.
