Loch Lomond and The Trossachs

Loch Achray

Loch Achray

Between Loch Katrine and Loch Achray extends the incomparable region known as The Trossachs. The name has various interpretations, many holding, however, to that of ‘bristly region’ — in view of the afforestation which has been carried out in this area the name is undoubtedly an apt one. Most visitors come to The Trossachs from Aberfoyle, along the road built by the Duke of Montrose early last century and which is still called the Duke’s Road. Loch Achray provided Turner with the subject of one of his well-known paintings.

From the Trossachs Hotel on the northern bank the visitor may climb Ben A’an and will be rewarded by a grand view of the area. North of Callander, a good centre for the exploration of The Trossachs and the surrounding region, the road to Killin first climbs over the Pass of Leny where the River Leny tumbles over a charming waterfall. On the far side of the pass is St Bride’s Chapel, an ancient building which has been restored as a memorial to Sir Walter Scott.
