Great GlenLoch Lochy
The whole of the north-west of Scotland is divided from the rest by the Great Glen, a natural rift containing three lochs Lochy, Oich, and Ness. The Caledonian Canal makes use of these lochs and although little used today it remains a remarkable example of marine engineering. Loch Lochy is ten miles long and a mile wide. It is the most southerly of the three lochs and is enclosed by steep wooded hillsides. The River Arkaig connects Loch Lochy with Loch Arkaig and the road connecting the two is known as the Dark Mile because of the interlacing of the trees bordering the road. |
