Great Glen
Loch Ness
Castle Urquhart

Loch Ness is 24 miles in length, about a mile wide and reaches a depth of
700 ft. Loch Ness is famous for its monster, and whether one is a believer or a
sceptic there is no doubt that the denizen of the deep is good for local trade.
On the western shore, not far from Drumnadrochit, are the ruins of Castle
Urquhart (below). There was a previous stronghold here which was captured
in the twelfth century by Edward I who reconstructed the Castle.
At the southern end of Loch Ness is the town of Fort Augustus. The Fort was
built in 1715. A Benedictine abbey now stands on the site.
