Glen CoeMamore Hills
To the north of Loch Leven rise the Mamore Hills between the loch and Glen Nevis, with Binnein Mor, the highest peak, reaching 8,700 feet. The twin peaks of Ben Vair overlook Ballachulish, a village famous for its slate quarries, from which a car-ferry crosses to North Ballachulish, avoiding a detour round Loch Leven, at the head of which is Kinlochleven, a thriving industrial town with aluminium works powered by water from the Blackwater Reservoir in the hills above. On the island of St Munda in the loch are buried some of those who were slain in the infamous massacre of 1692. |
