River Spey

River Spey near Auchgourish

The Spey, shown here near Auchgourish, is one of the longest rivers in Scotland and the fastest flowing in Great Britain, and is a noted salmon stream. The upper part of the Spey valley is followed by the main road and railway from Perth to Inverness.

The road was first constructed by General Wade between 1726 and 1733, improved by Telford in 1880 and completely reconstructed a century later, so that it is now one of the finest mountain roads in the country. North of Boat of Garten is Strath Spey, the wide lower valley of the river, which has given its name to one of the Scottish country dances.
