I know that I should always try to be good. But it's awfully hard you see
For the naughtiest toy in the whole world. Is the one that belongs to me

Hoppity: Tiddlee-tum, tiddlee-tee, diddlee-dum, diddlee-dee
Sara: Listen to him sing
Hoppity: Tiddlee-tum, tiddlee-tee, diddlee-dum, diddlee-dee

Words Mean Anything: Remembering 'Sara and Hoppity'...

Unseen in the UK for some thirty years, with no episodes available on video, it came as something of a surprise that the Sara and Hoppity page should prove as popular as Space Patrol itself. From what started as just an addenda to put Space Patrol in the context of those who produced it, we now give visitors to this new website a chance to reminisce and share their memories of Sara and Hoppity with us and other fans ...

Elaine Mars (UK)
"I didn't see any mention of this song.......

Up and down, up and down,
See the needle going,
Up and down up and down,
Sewing sewing sewing

Making dresses,blouses too
When they're ready,
They will look as good as new
Up and down....etc"

I'm pretty certain it was Miss Julie sang this song whilst doing repairs on the dolls clothes. That and the theme song were rather 'catchy'. I always thought, which is presumably why I can still sing them. By the way did you ever come across another puppet production called 'The Bodkin Club'. It was around at roughly the same time as 'S&H'...had the same feel as the other Roberta Leigh stuff so wondered if there was a connection. Only saw the one episode so it could have been a pilot....."

Jeremy Clark (UK)
(S&H Note: Jeremy is a big fan of Sara and Hoppity, and his memories kicked off this page and the website to a big start, so I'd like to thank him for all his help and include some of his recollections here)

Sara and Hoppity (The Pilot). The junkman brings a toy into the hospital for Sara, it's a really dirty toy. The toy only has one leg. So Sara takes the toy into the workshop, where her dad is busy mending broken toys. Later he can't find a leg to match the other one, so he puts a smaller leg on the toy (that's how Hoppity got his name). Then Sara takes the doll into Ms Julie's room, where Ms Julie makes some new clothes for the toy, then Sara's mum paints a cheeky face on the doll. Later Sara winds the doll up (this bit really scared me when I was small), And Hoppity sings his song.

The theatre: It's Sara's birthday, so as a special treat, Mrs Brown takes Sara and Hoppity off to the theatre, where Hoppity hops on to the stage.

The skating lesson; Mr Brown teaches Sara and Hoppity, how to skate, but poor Hoppity falls into the ice, and has to be rescued with a fishing net.

Wallpapering: The dolls hospital needs wallpaper, so Mrs Brown and Sara and Hoppity go into town where they buy some wallpaper. Later while putting up the wallpaper, Hoppity hops into the bucket of paste and gets really sticky.

While in a big department store at Christmas, Sara and Hoppity see Father Christmas. Hoppity hops into Father Christmas' sack and his clockwork runs down. Sara is really upset, but later at home there's a knock at the door, there's a girl(I think her name is Jessanim) who has chosen a present from Father Christmas' sack. No guessing what the present is - it's Hoppity!

I do remember another Christmas Sara and Hoppity: It's Christmas Eve, the junkman has come to see the family. He tells Sara how he used to whisper up the chimney to Father Christmas. Later Hoppity goes up the chimney, and gets stuck. Luckly he gets swept down again.

There's a fancy dress in town. Hoppity and Shaggy enter it, as a jockey (Hoppity) and horse (Shaggy) - thanks to Ms Julie, as she makes Hoppity's jockey out fit.

The Browns go on holiday, where Hoppity gets up to mischief by falling down on a lie-low which gets sweaped out to sea, and by falling down on a rock which gets surrounded by the sea. Lucky he gets rescued both times.

Georgy comes round... while Sara's not looking he gets Hoppity and puts him a parcel, which Georgy puts in a postbox, so imagine a lady's surprised face seeing a hopping parcel.

Mr Brown play's a tuba in a brassband, but when the band comes round to play, Mr Brown can't play his instrument, why because Hoppity is in the tuba."

Diane (US)
"I took a look at your Sara and Hoppity site and I am absolutely flabbergasted. What a beautifully done piece of work. I thought that there was next to no information available on this series and you lovingly and thoroughly crafted a work of art there."

Barbara Denise (UK)
"When Sarah went to bed her Mum used to sing a song to her. It goes , 'When you're asleep you're the most beautiful girl in the world.' or , 'the loveliest girl' etc. That's how it started and it might prompt someone to remembering more. I know the tune for the first few lines and can sort of hum it , but that's all. Well done to you.Your site brings a lot of memories back to me."

Jeff Jones (Cyberspace)
"Nobody ever believed me, 'you must have been dreaming' they would say, but now, after all these years the truth is out there. and what a voice she had, I always thought it must be some vampy campy lady like Fenella Fielding. Anyway thanks for a great site, this 41 year old man thinks you're great..."

Gina (UK)
"I remember Mrs Brown singing Sarah a lullaby when she was in bed. I recall the tune but can only remember the words '...when you're asleep you're the prettiest girl in the world'. Do you know what episode it was and the rest of the song?
Sarah and Hoppitty was my favourite childhood TV programme and it was so lovely to see the web site. Many thanks for the nostalgic moments."

Karen Kearney (Australia)
"I've just been to your website and have seen that you wanted information The Big Book of Sara and Hoppity. It's one that I have from my childhood, although it is just about falling apart now. I came across
your site looking for
Sara and Hoppity links, hoping that I might find another to replace it...
Although my book's falling to bits, most of it is still there, including the front cover. It was given to me here in Australia when I was a child and I fell in love with it. We didn't ever get the show over here I don't think but obviously the book made its way out here. It is just charming."

Ms S. Rea (Cyberspace)
"I can't believe after 40 years that I've finally found stuff about Sara and Hoppity. After sitting reminiscing with a pal about old programmes I decided to check it out on the net and couldn't believe how easy it was to find. I used to watch this programme as a kid and can still remember most of the words to the opening song. But every time I've asked anyone if they remembered it, it seems that not another soul watched the programme, I was beginning to think it was all in my mind. I can even remember the episode about Georgie and Sara swinging on the gate!
Unbelievable that there is a whole web site dedicated to the programme."

Diane Shand (UK)
"I would just like tio say what a great site. I use to watch Sara and Hoppity and loved it. When I told my sons about it they laughed and told me they didn't believe there was ever such a programe. Well now I can say look at this and eat your words."
