Space Patrol in Other Countries It would now seem Space Patrol had a not unreasonable distribution overseas and throughout the world, by Global Television Services Limited (except in the U.S. and possibly both Americas). One country in which it did seem to flourish was Australia, possibly because colour television was not widely introduced until 1975 and the series was repeated at least three times. Australia: The Australian Broadcasting Corporation transmitted Space Patrol from January 1964 in the Melbourne region, with a first run completed by October, though unconfirmed sources say the earliest transmission was in November 1963. Only an incomplete order from this initial run is know, but repeats of the series in 1968 and 1970 echo most of the original transmission and has been used for this list. First transmission: Mondays at 6pm (bar The Wandering Asteroid - 6.30pm) Melbourne region: From 13 January to 5 October 1964 Newcastle region: 1964, Wednesdays at 6pm - dates unknown. 1968 Repeat: Monday to Thursday at 5.15pm Melbourne region: Shown from Wednesday October 30th. The series stopped briefly for Christmas and it is not known if the final episodes were broadcast. 1970 Repeat: Monday to Thursday at 5pm (some episodes at 5.05pm or 5.10pm) Sydney region: Thursday 21 August to Tuesday 27 October. Melbourne region: Tuesday 25 August to Thursday 29 October.
We have an unconfirmed rumour Space Patrol may have been sold to Australia fairly recently, with airings in the Perth area within the last five years. New Zealand: No airdate between January and October 1964 on any of the four regions but other leads are being pursued. America: The series was sold to the United States, under the title Planet Patrol to avoid confusion with a live-action series already produced in the 1950s. However, it would so far appear that the only areas it appeared on the mainland are in the New York/New Jersey & Los Angeles areas - the two major television markets in America: WPIX 11 New York. Shown Sundays at 5.30pm from early 1964. WWOR 9 New York. Repeated around 1970. ![]() Above - An advert for the first-run of Planet Patrol in the USA from 1964: Planet Patrol, already in the New York market, brings the world of the future, the year 2100 into lively focus. Offers a unique production of intriguing science fiction based on technically accurate material. A Wonderama Production, produced by Roberta Leigh and Arthur Provis; created and written by Roberta Leigh with technical advice by Colin Ronan. A National Interest Picture Ltd. Production. After only 4 weeks on WPIX, New York Highest Rating of any show 5.30 PM, Sundays KHJ-TV (Channel 9) Los Angeles. Shown 1965 (unknown if this was original run, or repeat). Areas believed never to have screened Space Patrol/Planet Patrol: San Francisco or Bay areas. Detroit Hawaii: Channel unconfirmed, either KHON Channel 2 (at the time KONA TV) or KGMB Channel 9. Year unknown. Canada: Most informed sources list Canada as the third main country to show Space Patrol but we have uncovered no documentary or TV listing confirmation at all. It may be the series, as in the US, only received a sporadic local distribution. Toronto (CBLT Channel 6), one of the few regions listings are available for, did not screen the series any time over 1963 to 1964. We have also been in touch with fans of the Gerry Anderson series in Canada, and none so far have any recollection of the series appearing there. In his interview on the DVD Box Set, Arthur Provis recalls Roberta Leigh managing to succesfully sell the series in Windsor, Ontario - until the executives saw an episode and thought it too frightening for children! They promptly cancelled the sale... Other Countries: Malta: All 39 episodes shown on Malta Television in 1964, in English.
Mexico/Venezuela:We've now received a few e-mails (some in Spanish) which indicates the series was also shown there towards the end of the 1960s: "Hola somos de Caracas Venezuela me llamo Carlos y mi hermano Armando nosotros veiamos Patrulla de el Espacio (Space Patrol) a finales de los sesentas y comienzos de los setentas en el canal 4 de television llamado Venevision http://www.venevision.com/ traducida al castellano en Mejico... Saludos" Translation (as best we could. Oh, for an Elektran... ) "Hello. We are from Caracas, Venezuela. I am called Carlos and my brother Armando saw Patrol of Space (Space Patrol) at the end of the sixties and beginning of the seventies on Channel 4 television called Venevision. Gracias por haberme hecho tan feliz cuando era niño. quisiera encontrar los sonidos electronicos de la serie." Translation: "Thanks! from VENEZUELA!!! Thanks for making me so happy when I was young (and) wanted to find the electronic sounds of the series." And more recently, from Ricardo Navarro in Los Angeles: "At the time of Space Patrol's broadcasts I lived in Caracas, Venezuela. I used to come from school and turn the TV on and watch Space Patrol. I still remember the sound of the Galasphere, the sound of the shuttles and some of the voices. Even though I knew they were puppets I had this strange attracion for Marla. :-) Not until recently I started to dig out some of the nostalgic moments of my life. Tonight I know that the internet has a purpose. Finding your website makes it clear that I can tell my kids in the future about the TV series that I used to watch." Brazil: Shown on the Globo Television Channel around 1970, and dubbed into Portugese.
