The Puppets Of Space Patrol

Part Two - The Guest Cast

This is an attempt to catalogue the various puppets seen in the series. Secondary cast puppets have been named after the most notable appearance (if there was one) but have also listed alternate appearances:

Professor Zeffer

Doctor Mall (right)Professor ZefferCommander Brog (right)

Left to right: Doctor Mall (right), Professor Zeffer and Commander Brog (right).

Originally appearing in the first episode The Swamps Of Jupiter as Doctor Mall, the puppet is seen on a semi-regular basis as Professor Zeffer starting in The Wandering Asteroid:
Professor Zeffer (WA, HI, NP, MS, TR, SD, HM, DS)
Doctor Mall (SJ)
Martian Crewmember (SS)
Martian Artist (TF)
Commander Brog (FM, BS)

The Martian President

Martian Colonist (right)'Princess' MarlaMartian President (Series 2)

Left to right: Colonist (right), the first Martian President and his successor.

Originally Doctor Mall’s assistant in The Swamps Of Jupiter (see above), the puppet reappears as the Martian President in The Wandering Asteroid, and is continually used in this role despite varying voices and a wholly revamped appearance in the second series:
Mall’s Assistant (SJ)
Martian President (WA, HI, GT, BS)
Martian President, second series (SF, DW, SD, WB)
Colonist (SN)
Martian Miner (BS, FM)

Roberts

Zeffer's AssistantRadio OperatorDoctor Roberts

Left to right: Zeffer's assistant, the radio operator and Doctor Roberts

Playing ‘virtually everyone else’ at Space Headquarters, this blond puppet only seems to get named in two episodes - and both are called Roberts! - but he first appears as Zeffer’s assistant in The Wandering Asteroid:
Zeffer’s assistant (WA, HI, MS, NP, TR, SD, HM, DS)
Cloud Dispersal Officer (CD)
Coastguard Station 3 (RR)
Duty Officer ‘Roberts’ (MM, PT, ES)
Radio Operator (RR, RS, MTS, PT)
Travel Agent (TF)
Secretary (PT)
Doctor Roberts (HF)
UGF Operator (SD)

Doctor Brown

Doctor BrownDoctor MarshallDoctor Brown, I presume?

Left to right: Doctor Brown, Doctor Marshall and Doctor Brown (presumably) from The Shrinking Gas Of Jupiter.

A somewhat wild-eyed and blond character, first seen but unnamed in The Shrinking Spaceman and revealed as Doctor Brown in The Walking Lake Of Jupiter. Besides other one-off appearances, the puppet has a beard added to become semi-regular Doctor Marshall of the Moon Observatory in later episodes:
Doctor Brown (SS, WJ, TB, SG)
Fisherman (HF)
Moon Observatory Scientist/Doctor Marshall (ES, DW)

This puppet would appear to have been revamped from 'Miss Julie', the kindly old lady from Sara and Hoppity.

Jim Barratt

Jim BarrattDoctor (TR, DS)UGF Major

Left to right: Jim Barratt , the doctor from Destruction By Sound and the UGF Major.

First seen as Doctor Smith on the Jupiter Scientific HQ in The Shrinking Spaceman, the puppet reappears with a moustache as semi-regular Jim Barratt of the Underwater Sea Farm, making his debut in The Robot Revolution:
Doctor Smith (SS, WJ, TB)
Jim Barratt (RR, MTS, JW)
Moon Observatory Scientist (CD)
UGF Major (SD)
Doctor (TR, DS)

Gamewarden
First seen as one of the Martian colonists in The Slaves Of Neptune, the puppet makes several appearances but most notably early on as the Gamewarden in Husky Becomes Invisible:

GamewardenBerridge's aideTyrig

Left to right: Gamewarden (HI), Lead Forger (TF) and Tirig (SD)

Colonist (SN)
Berridge's Aide (MM)
Lead Forger (TF)
Gamewarden (HI)
Jackson (ES)
Kolig (SF)
Tirig (SD)

The Venusian President

Venusian President'Princess' MarlaVenusian President

Left to right: Venusian President, Major Valla (MM) and Venusian (VV)

Probably a heavily disguised recast of the early Slim puppet (compare him standing next to Major Valla above) but difficult to know for certain so he is listed here separately:
Venusian President (VV, HF, ES, UA, EV, SF)
Venusian (VV)
Major Valla (MM)

Berridge

BerridgeJonesDuncan's assistant

Left to right: Berridge (MM), Jones (MTS) and Duncan's assistant (ES)

The series archetypal crook puppet, making his first appearance in Mystery On The Moon:
Berridge (MM)
Jones (MTS)
Forger (TF)
Duncan’s assistant (ES)
Kolig’s assistant (SF)
Brig (WB)

This puppet would appear to have been revamped from 'The Old Man' who sells Hoppity to Sara in the pilot episode of Sara and Hoppity.

Gallia

GalliaPatraBorse

Left to right: Gallia (VV), Patra(HF) and Borse (SD)

Makes his debut in Volcanoes Of Venus and has several more prominant roles throughout the series:
Gallia (VV)
Tara (TS)
Patra (HF)
Miga (UA)
Professor Borra (EV)
Borse (SD)

This puppet would later reappear, with more human eyes, as 'Doctor Fang' in Wonder Boy and Tiger, and a road sweep in the first episode of Send For Dithers.

Giant

GiantMartian PrimitiveLunar Prospector

Distinctive from the other puppets by having a more open mouth than the standard ‘flip lip’ type and (going by the molung) a much larger head, this bearded character first appears as the alien giant in The New Planet and then as the similar primitive in The Hairy Men Of Mars. He then makes a final appearance in Destruction By Sound as a lunar prospector.

Aszom

Gallia's aideMiga's aideThe evil bearded Venusian (right)

Left to right: Gallia's aide (VV), Miga's aide (UA) and 'Evil Venusian' (right - SD)

Usually the side kick of whatever Venusian is baddie-of-the-week, the puppet makes its debut as the aide to Gallia in Volcanoes Of Venus but is not give a name until he appears as the aide of Tara in Time Stands Still. He then goes on to make a few unchanged appearances before seemingly being revamped into a dark-haired Venusian:
Gallia’s aide (VV)
Aszom (TS)
Dara (ES)
Venusian President's aide (EV)
Miga's Aide (UA)
Venusian (SD)
Venusian (WB)

Doctor Duncan

Doctor DuncanDoctor MasonMarog

Left to right: Dr Duncan (ES), Dr Mason(SF) and Marog (WB)

Wide faced and usually villainous, the puppet debuts towards the end of the first series as Doctor Duncan and makes several more appearances throughout the second:
Doctor Duncan (ES)
Williams (EV)
Doctor Mason (SF)
Scientist (DW)
Marog (WB)

Mac

'Mac'Our man in JapanThe one on the left

Left to right: Mac (MM), Asian Man (MM) and Tirig's man (left) in Sands Of Death

Distinct staring eyed puppet who operates the laser in Mystery On The Moon. We think the puppet is revamped to appear as the Japanese man in the same episode (compare the eyes) and as the representative from Tokyo in The Miracle Tree Of Saturn before reappearing a couple of times in Series Two.
Mac (MM)
Japanese Man (MM)
Man in Tokyo (MTS)
Crook (SD)
Scientist (SG)

We close on the blazing sun in space before fading to a view of ringed planet Saturn. A gyroscope-like ship, enclosed in a flickering bubble of energy, speeds past us and beyond accompanied by almost musical radiophonic tones. We see it pass the Moon before spinning away to the twilight of the Earth's curved horizon... As we hear a grinding rhythmic electronic score, we see scenes of a futuristic city under a dramatic sky. Some buildings and antennae rotate, light pours from other structures as bullet-shaped and spherical vehicles move rapidly back and forth... 'This is Earth - the year 2100. New York is the headquarters of Space Patrol and men from Earth, Mars and Venus live and work there as guardians of peace. This is the story of those men, whose courage and daring make the universe safe for us all.'
