The thumb-nails below were taken with the Sheffield University digital camera while travelling to Gough via Tristan da Cunha, so the quality is not superb, but they give a flavour of the beauty of the islands.
| Edinburgh (the settlement on Tristan da Cunha) with the fishing vessel Edinburgh in the foreground. The cone of the 1960's volcanic eruption is just visible as the darker rough ground to the left of the settlement. |
| Close-up of Edinburgh. The harbour is on the right. |
| Close-up of the eruption, with the pasture close to the settlement just visible on the right. The only building destroyed was the fish factory. |
| The Oryx landing on the SA Agulhas after dropping off islanders on Tristan. |
| My first view of Gough Island. The small bump on the right is Penguin Island (385 feet high). |
| A view from the weather station of the SA Agulhas anchored off Gough. |
| View of the Gough weather station from Ruin Ridge (about 1800 feet). |
| First glimpse of South Peak (2493 feet) as you reach Ruin Ridge, with a light dusting of snow. |
| A view back to Ruin Ridge from the slopes of South Peak. |
| A view of the natural peat-slips on the south face of South Peak. |
| Nesting Sooty Albatross on the path returning from South Peak. |
