Redditch Swimming Club Diddy Trophy Gala Report  12th January 2008

Redditch Swimming Club kicked-off its 2008 competition programme when they hosted their own “Diddy” gala for swimmers aged 9-12 at Drotwitch on 12th January. A strong all-round performance resulted in a fine second place behind Worcester.

Stars for Redditch were the “new” 9 year olds where Abigail Humphreys and Oliver Thomson both completed doubles, each winning both backstroke and butterfly. Oliver was also part of the 9 years boys squad, with Anant Kapoor, James Coward and Jack Harding, that took first place in both the medley and freestyle relays. Anant himself came second in the freestyle and breasstroke, a feat that was equalled by Caitlin Britt. Caitlin and Abigail were joined in the relays by Eve Parker and Isobel Wilson where they took third places in both freestyle and Medley. This was a great start for these young swimmers and should lead to great things in the future.

Although the older swimmers couldn’t pick up any more wins, the strength in depth of the performance was shown as Redditch achieved 15 second and 15 third place finishes.

In the 10 year old age group Cameron Berbezier swimming in his first gala came a superb second in the freestyle. Oliver Thomson swimming above his age added a splendid second in backstroke to add to his earlier successes. Third places were scored by Amelia Tompkin in freestyle and Alice Fish and Jake Rowland in breaststroke. The boys relay team of Oliver, Cameron, Anant and Jack took 3rd in the medley relay and the girls team of Alice, Amelia, Madeleine Jarvis and Eleanor Jarvis took 4th place in their medley.

For the 11 year olds Adam Watson(backstroke) and Caitlin Green(freestyle) came home in second position. Caitlin added a third place in breaststroke and Nicola Moss took thirds in butterfly and backstroke. The boys relay team of Adam, Braiden Hartles, Cameron Berbezier and Daniel Bridgman were second in the freestyle relay and with Jake Rowland replacing Cameron came third in the medley relay. The girls relay squad, Nicola, Caitlin, Abigail Enston and Amelia Tompkin also took third in the freestyle relay.

12 year olds Sophie Bridgman(butterfly) and Lydia May(breast) took second places and Sophie added third in the freestyle. David Green finished third in both freestyle and backstroke. The girls relay team, Sophie, Lydia, Emma Hardacre and Molly Dutton swam well to achieve second place finishes in both free and medley relays. The boys team of David, Ben Young, Jordan Workman and Taylor Hartley came fourth in the freestyle relay.

The final two strong second places came from the girls and boys 8x1 freestyle squads. This comprises two swimmers from each age group. For the boys this comprised Oliver, Anant, Cameron, Jake, Dan, Braiden, Taylor and David and for the girls Abigail Humphreys, Caitlin Britt, Amelia, Madeleine, Caitlin Green, Nicola, Lydia and Sophie.

This was a fine team performance with great enthusiasm shown by the whole team. Well done!
