National Triathlon Championships at Wolverhampton  18th and 19th November 2007

Two RSC girls competed with great success in the National Triathlon Championships held at Wolverhampton on the 18th and 19th of November

Nicola Moss, ten years old; a member of Redditch Swimming Club and Walkwood Middle School, was competing for Redditch Swimming Club and the West Midlands Modern Pentathlon Club and took the bronze medal in Youth E girls.

Courtney Hyde, also a member of RSC and competing for the West Midlands Modern Pentathlon Club came home in fourth place in Youth B.

For Nicola’s age group the triathlon consists of a 50 metre swim, a ten shot pistol Shoot at 10 metres, and a 1000m run; a guide time or score in each of the three disciplines earns 1000 points per discipline. The swim event took place over three heats and Nicola won her heat in a time of 38.91 secs giving her 1016 points.  Nicola then had a couple of hours to gather herself for the shoot. She has been practising her shooting at the Henley in Arden Club and training has been going well. On the day she shot a personal best competition score to gain 796 points and with her swim result she was in 4th place after the first day's competition.

Fortunately for Nicola her run was scheduled for 9 o'clock the next morning, before the weather turned really nasty. A very gutsy run gave her second place in the run in a personal best time of 3 mins 38 secs, another 1176 points. Her run had moved her up into the Bronze Medal position in the individual event and also moved the West Midlands Team into 3rd place in the team event.

For Courtney the Triathlon includes a 200 metre swim, a twenty shot Pistol Shoot at 10 metres, and a 2000m run. Courtney was ranked sixth, seventh and sixth respectively and this was sufficient for fourth place
