Rome & Sicily (14-24 April 2004)

We stayed in Rome for two days and then near Linguaglossa, Sicily, for seven days; here are some of our best photos:

The Colosseum at night. I'm rather proud of this shot!

The Trevi Fountain

Tempio di Saturno and Arco di Settimio Severo at The Forum

Mount Etna (alt. 3.4 km) completely dominates the landscape in Sicily.

This is the view from outside the Azienda where we stayed.

The three craters at the summit vent volcanic gases continuously.

A local guide took us to a recent, but extinct secondary crater at 2200 m.

Etna is covered in snow even in April and May.

The landscape possesses a surreal, lunar quality.

The Greco-Roman amphitheatre, Taormina.

Taormina is high up on a rocky plateau overlooking Etna

and the sea

North of Etna, the river Alcantara traces its way through the volcano's slopes, hollowing out its famous gorge, the Gole dell' Alcantara

Note the exposed prisms of basaltic rock in the gorge, formed from earlier volcanic activity.
