Although the famous barbican was badly scarred in the autumn of 1942 and more than 50 high explosive bombs were dropped in the borough, Sandwich came through the war comparatively lightly considering its precarious position in Hellfire Corner. It was one of only three Kent local authority districts not to have any fatalities (the others were Southborough and Queensborough) and only seven properties were completely destroyed. Compare that to Dover -199 killed and 2,998 properties severely damaged. This picture was taken on 22 January 1943.
