Road Racing with Muswell Hill Runners

The Club takes part in two local leagues which involve road racing - a Summer League, consisting of 5 or 6 races, over 5 miles or 10K, and the Chingford League, which is a mixture of cross-country and road races. In addition, members enter other road races as individuals, but there are a number of specific races which Club members go to in large numbers.

The Summer League involves about 10 Clubs in the London area. Races are held on Sunday mornings from April to October, with each event being hosted by one of the member Clubs. The main race is always 5 miles or 10K and starts at 10.30 a.m. This is followed by a Tenderfoot race for Juniors, normally about 3K. There are then a series of 400-metre relay races for senior men, women and juniors. Runners pay £1.00 to enter, and the host club uses much of the money to provide sandwiches, snacks and cakes for the competitors (after the races!). A complicated system of age-weightings is used to calculate results and final league tables. In previous years Muswell Hill Runners have swept the board in all categories. The atmosphere in the Summer League is very friendly and suitable for runners of all standards.

The Chingford League is a rather higher standard. It is open to both men and women, with women scoring separately. There are usually four road races through the season which runs from September to March. The dates this season are:

Dates Venue Type of Race Time
11/9/99 Highams Park Road Relay 1430
5/10/99 Eastway Cycle Circuit Road 1915
23/10/99 Loughton Cross-Country 1330

15/1/00 Trent Park Cross-Country 1330

7/3/00 Eastway Cycle Circuit Road 1915

Races at Eastway are 5K and take place on Tuesday evenings at 7.15 p.m. at the Cycle Track in Leyton in the Lea Valley Park

Finally many Club members enter road races as individuals. Particularly popular races include of course the London Marathon and many half-marathons. Races which normally enjoy a good turn-out from Muswell Hill Runners are:

Canterbury 10 Mile (late January)
Watford Half-Marathon (early February)
Bury 20 Mile (late February)
Finchley 20 Mile (mid-March)
London Marathon (mid-April)
Crouch End 10K (late April)
Cabbage Patch 10 Mile (late September)
Harrow Marathon and Half-Marathon (early November)
