Conroi du Burm - History
The period in European history which we represent is the time between
the Norman Conquest (1066AD) to the death of Edward I (1307).
We normally represent the period around the year 1200, in the reign of good King John,
but can represent earlier or later times if required.
A brief history of the times:
- 1066 The Norman Conquest, battle of Hastings
- 1070 Rebellion in York crushed by William
- 1087 William the Conqueror dies. Realm divided between William II (Rufus) in England and Robert ‘Curthose’ in Normandy
- 1100 William Rufus killed by an arrow whilst hunting. Accession of Henry I
- 1106 Normandy and England re-united under Henry I
- 1135 Death of Henry I, succeeded by Stephen I who breaks his earlier oath recognising Matilda, his cousin, as heir
- 1139 Matilda lands in England with her army, civil war ensues
- 1141 Stephen captured at the battle of Lincoln, later exchanged for Robert of Gloucester
- 1153 Treaty of Winchester - civil war ends
- 1154 Stephen I dies, accession of Henry II. Start of the Plantagenet dynasty.
- 1154 Nicolas Brakespeare becomes Pope Adrian IV - the only English Pope.
- 1170 Thomas Becket murdered
- 1187 Saladin captures Jeruselem
- 1189 Henry II dies, suceeded by Richard I (Coeur de Lyon)
- 1189 Start of the Third Crusade. John, Richard's brother, conspires with Philip II of France to supplant him
- 1192 Richard makes a truce with Saladin
- 1192 Richard captured returning from the crusades. Held for ransom
- 1194 Richard ransomed and returns home. Englands resources depleted to pay the ransom
- 1199 Richard dies,in his reign he has only been in England for about six months. Succeeded by John
- 1202 Abortive attempt at the Fourth Crusade
- 1208 Albigensian Crusade against the Cathars of southern France
- 1209 John excommunicated by the Pope over his refusal to accept a new Archbishop of Canterbury
- 1212 Children's Crusade - most are lost or sold as slaves
- 1213 John reconciled with Pope Innocent III and Stephen Langton, Archbishop of Canterbury
- 1215 Signing of Magna Carta
- 1216 John dies of dysentry. Henry III, his son, succeeds him. William Marshall is Regent.
- 1217 Fifth Crusade, aimed at Egypt
- 1222 April 23rd becomes St. Georges day
- 1227 Henry III gets full kingship
- 1228 Sixth Crusade
- 1263 Start of the Baronial Revolt
- 1264 Battle of Lewes
- 1265 Battle of Evesham
- 1272 Henry III dies, succeeded by Edward I (Longshanks)
- 1277 - 1282 Campaign to control Llywelyn ap Gruffydd of Wales
- 1295 The "Model Parliament" and judicial reform
- 1305 Execution of William Wallace
- 1306 Robert the Bruce siezes the Scottish throne
- 1307 Death of Edward I on route to a Scottish campaign
