Locomotives

The railway has owned several locomotives since conception in 1994. The first being the traditional Mamod. This page lists the current locomotives that operate on the railway, or that are resident here. Details of previous motive power can be found on the history page.

Built in Spring 1999 by Roundhouse, Doncaster. Inspired by Bagnal, it is a typical 0-4-0ST with double acting slide valve cylinders. Running pressure 40psi. Extras include working draincocks and lining by Geoff Munday in the style of FR 'Britomart'. This loco acts as the mainstay of motive power on the railway.

Built around 1994 by Pearse Locomotives, Shropshire. The 'Genesis' design is again freelance, but based on typical Hunslet loco characteristics. It is an 0-6-0T with working whistle and operating pressure of 50psi. It was originally owned by the Plymstock & Hooe Railway, Devon; tranfered to the Woodland Railway in Summer 2002.

Built for the 1998 season in the railway's own works. 'Niwlog' (welsh for misty) is based on an Alan Keef 80hp diesel. The loco is owned by the railway's p-way department and is not used for passenger trains. The loco is battery powered with single axle drive. It is currently out of service in the paintshop.

Leichhardt in the sidings, September 2003

Built for the Woodland Railway in September 2002 by John Turner with chassis by Essel Eng., and electronics and final assembly also being completed outside. This loco is a close-scale model of a 150hp 0-6-0 Baguley diesel now owned by the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway, North Devon. It was repainted in 2003 at the Cooper Craft Works and is now used on off-peak passenger services and shunting duties.

This loco is currently owned by Coopercraft Ltd, and is at present shared between the Woodland Railway and the Dovedale Railway. No.85 is a model of the ex-Sierra Leone Hunslet operating on the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway. It was built by Merlin and is currently stripped down undergoing a complete overhaul in the East London workshops.

Russell is owned by the Dovedale Railway, Clayhall; however it tends to spend most its time on the Woodland Railway (it spent its entire 2003 season working this line). It is an 2-6-2T, built by Roundhouse, Doncaster in Spring 2002. A model of the loco running under the same name on the Welsh Highland Railway, Porthmadog. The loco is usually to be seen running on special events.
