Locomotives

The railway has owned several locomotives since conception in 1994. Naturally it all started off with the traditional Mamod. This page lists the locomotives that rolled along the rails in the railway's last months of operation in 2006. Details of previous motive power can be found on the history page.

Built in Spring 1999 by Roundhouse, Doncaster. Inspired by Bagnal, it is a typical 0-4-0ST with double acting slide valve cylinders. Running pressure 40psi. Extras include working draincocks, and also lining by Geoff Munday inspired by the Ffestiniog Railway's 'Britomart'.

Built around 1994 by Pearse Locomotives, Shropshire. The 'Genesis' design is again freelance, but based on typical Hunslet loco characteristics. It is an 0-6-0T with working whistle and operating pressure of 50psi. It was originally owned by the Plymstock & Hooe Railway, Devon; tranfered to the Woodland Railway in Summer 2002. This loco is the only survivor after the WLR closed, and still resides with me (seeing occasional use) back down in Devon.

Built for the 1998 season in the railway's own 'works'. Niwlog (welsh for misty) is based on an Alan Keef 80hp diesel. The loco was owned by the railway's p-way department and so was not used for passenger trains (aside from the fact that it would have burnt out the motor). The loco is battery powered with single axle drive. In its last months before leaving, it operated in a grey livery with black buffer beams.

Leichhardt in the sidings, September 2003

Built for the Woodland Railway in September 2002 by John Turner with a chassis by Essel Engineering, and electronics and final assembly also being completed outside. This loco is a close-scale model of the 150hp 0-6-0 Baguley diesel locomotives as operated in Australia in the sugar cane fields. It was repainted in 2003 at Cooper Craft in a slightly better shade of green.

No.85 is a model of the ex-Sierra Leone Hunslet operating on the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway. It was built by Merlin and was stripped down as a joint project at Cooper Craft. Some years on (now 2009) it is still stripped down and owned by Tony Brown, however work has started again and he hopes to see it running again soon...

Russell is also owned by Tony Brown; It spent most its time on the WLR until the line closed. It is an 2-6-2T, built by Roundhouse, Doncaster in Spring 2002. A model of the loco running under the same name on the Welsh Highland Railway, Porthmadog. The loco now spends much of its time on holiday in Devon with 'Sir James Cameron'.
