The Route

Llanfair was the main station on the railway and provided the passing loop for bi-directional running. The station name was randomly taken from Llanfair-yn-Neubwll on Anglesey in Wales, but frankly it could have come from anywhere. The station always lacked much character, although it did improve a little in later years. The line from Llanfair to Nantmor was the high level line on a raised embankment. It crossed the path on a girder bridge before diving back into the trees, emerging at Nantmor. This station was intended to be based on the Welsh Highland Railway station - although I never got round to building the proper waiting shlter as I'd intended... The line then crossed the garden on a large sweeping bridge. It curved through the bushes to Burwarton.
Burwarton was modelled on the standard gauge station on the Cleobury Mortimer and Ditton Priors Railway in Shropshire. The wooden station building was out in the garden for over 10 years and stood up to the weather well - only got painted twice I think! The section from here onwards was constructed with the help of Mark Found during the filming of the Garden Railway series for the Discovery Channel. The railway crossed back to the west of the garden and climbed the steep 1 in 45 back to Llanfair Yard. The main running line passed along the back the yard before returning to the main station.
