Moon Myths

Mythology tells the story of creation of the cosmos and world, how all living things came to be, and why everything is the way it is.  Myth explains the order of the universe, including why the moon rises and sets.  Legends are popularised myths and stories that become embellished and embroidered as they are told a retold through generations.  The moon plays a role in many legends about the escapades and exploits of various figures, the moon also figures in folk tales and nursery rhymes, which are broken-down versions of myths, told for entertainment or to instil community values.

Moon tales lift us up into a magical realm where imagination rules and the hard facts of science become alien.  The moon and animals speak, people fly and climb into the sky, the moon comes down and captures people - anything in our wildest dreams can happen.  Moon tales never loose their magic!!

Odin's Chariots: A Norse Myth

A man named Mundilfair had two children so beautiful that he called his son Moon and his daughter Sun.  Odin, his brothers and their offspring, the Aesir, were so outraged at this daring that they snatched the children and placed them in the sky to guide the chariots of the sun and moon.  Moon leads the way and decides when the moon will wax and wane.  Moon leads the way decides when the moon will wax and wane.  He is accompanied by two children in the moon, Bil and Hjuki, whom he kidnapped.  Moon is forever chased by the wolf Hati.  Sun follows Moon and is always in a hurry because she is chased by another wolf, Skoll.  The wolves are the sons of a giantess, and they seek endlessly to eat sun and moon.  They will succeed in the end, at the Ragnarok, or the Twilight of the Gods.

In the meantime, the wolves occasionally manage to take a bite out of the sun or moon (causing eclipses).  The people below shout and beat kettles and pans together in order to frighten the sky wolves away.
