Moon Stories

Moon Falls over Missouri
One night in October 1939, between 7.30 ad 8.00 pm, residents around Springfield, Missouri were astonished to see the full moon suddenly loose its place and fall through the sky, flaming like a meteor.  On October 33, headlines in the Springfield News and Leader said "Extra! The Moon Falls on Stafford Route Three!"

One witness testified that the moon "looked to be about one or two hours high when it suddenly turned over and fell like a star would fall, making a ball of fire which could be seen down low for five or ten minutes.  No one around here ever heard of the moon falling, even people fifty years old.  Some wouldn't believe it".

And right they were.  It turned out that the flaming ball wasn't the moon after all.  Surprise, surprise!  It was a weather balloon meeting its demise as it fell through the atmosphere.

Furthermore, the moon wasn't even full that night.  At the time f the incident, the moon was barely visible waxing sickle just over the horizon.
