Strangeway Family Relatives in Leeds

Tracing the Strangeway family in Leeds is probably a typical situation found by many family historians looking for information about one family in a major city. The volumes are large and any name indexing is far from complete. With common surnames the situation is discouraging but with a less common name like Strangeway there some light at the end of tunnel.

Working Backwards

When searching for Strangeway entries spelling is always an issue, not just for early records but for recent ones too. The starting point for tracing this family line is my wife's mother - Elsie Shepherd; who was born Strangeway but for some reason always said it should be Strangeways. This is a spelling variation which crops up frequently in the records. Her parents were traced quite easily and provide the first generation back. Ernest Strangeway (1884-1950)

Ernest married Ruth Vickers (1885-1961) at St Cuthbert, Hunslet on 11 October 1913. They lived at 6 Albert Street, Holbeck in the 1920's and had 3 children - Edna, Leslie and Elsie. Ruth was a daughter of Henry and Jane Elizabeth Vickers (nee Smithey) of Leeds. But finding the parents of Ernest was, at first, confusing. This is because there were 2 Ernest Strangeway births in Leeds at about the same time - and my first attempts at locating his parents went down the wrong track. Fortunately I was helped greatly from this point by another family historian from Australia - also related to our family line. This provided the link to the next generation back -

George Strangeway (1851-?)

George married Elizabeth Shaw (1853-?) at the Parish Church, Market Weighton on 24 April 1871. But they must have moved to Leeds very soon afterwards - since most of the children were born in New Wortley. The children were -

George, Elizabeth and family appear in the 1881 Census Index - as Strangway - at Swain House, Wood Lane, Bradford. Why they were there is unknown but they were back in New Wortley again by 1884. Elizabeth was the daughter of Ralph and Mary Shaw of Bishop Burton but she was born at Holme on Spalding Moor. Her parents had moved to 69 Havelock Street, Wortley In Bramley by the time of the 1881 Census. This street appears again in the family records - Laura Alice was at 65 Havelock Street when she was married in 1893 and there was a Robert Strangeway living in Havelock Street in the 1871 list of electors. This Robert almost certainly provides a link with the next generation back -

Henry Strangeway (1813 or 1817 - 1887)

Henry married Elizabeth Hodgson sometime in the 1840's - in either York or Market Weighton. It is possible that Henry had previously married Ann Nelson but without the marriage certificate for Henry and Elizabeth this is far from certain (see below). We do know that Henry and Elizabeth were living in Southgate, Market Weighton by the time of the 1851 Census and that they stayed there for the rest of their lives - Elizabeth surviving until 1909. Their 9 children are thought to be -

With the lack of information about Henry's marriage it is not possible to be clear about any other children or Henry's parents. If this Henry was the same as the one that married Ann Nelson then there would be 3 earlier children - Elizabeth who was baptised at St Margaret, York on 27 April 1839, Mary whose birth was registered in the June quarter of 1841 and Joseph baptised at Nether Poppleton on 29 March 1843. But no child has been traced after 1843. Updated Jan 2003

The "other" Henry was born in York on 30 September 1817 and baptised at St Mary Bishophill Senior on 8 October by John and Elizabeth Strangeway. The marriage to Ann Nelson was at St Dennis, York on 21 May 1838 with Robert Strangeway and Ellen Beascroft as witnesses. It seems that there are only 2 adult Robert Strangeways that could be this witness. They are both shown in the 1851 Census for York and the 1868 Voters Lists - shown as born 1811 and 1816 respectively. The elder is thought to have died in 1853 and be the husband of Frances Gibson (his parents are not known). The younger Robert is thought to have been a blacksmith who died in 1874 (the son of Robert and Sarah born March 1815) who married Margaret Carr in 1835 and Jane Stephenson in 1839. This Robert and Henry have now both been found in the 1841 Census. At first, Robert the blacksmith was thought to be the less-likely relative but he did have a son named Henry (b 1849) and is now thought that his father (Robert b. 1784) was, in fact, Henry's uncle. Also "our" Henry had a son named Robert - but his birth registration has yet to be found. Updated Jan 2003

Without the vital marriage certificate for Henry and Elizabeth we have to look for other possible clues. Information found so far that might be relevant includes -

• The 1851 Census for York does not give any likely alternative Henry living in the area so this reduces the chance of there ever being two Henrys.
• Family Records Centre entry - Death Dec 1844 STRANGEWAY Ann (York 23 470); this could be Ann Nelson the wife of Henry (but no age shown to help confirm). If the Henry who married Ann Nelson was the same one that married Elizabeth Hodgson then Ann would have had to have left or died around 1843-44. Copy ordered 24-Jan-2003. Update 30- Jan-2003 The certificate confirmed that this was the wife of Henry and that she died 18th November 1844 at Nether Poppleton aged 26 of consumption. The informant was Henry Strangeway. This greatly increases the case for there being just one Henry and that Elizabeth Hodgson was his second wife. Based on this I have now started working on the assumption that the Henry born 30-Sep-1817 is the family line to follow until any evidence to the contrary appears.
• Family Records Centre entries - Deaths Dec 1842 STRANGEWAYS Henry (York 23 424) and STRANGEWAYS Henry (York 23 441); despite the spelling one of these could be the husband of Ann (the other being Henry Strangwayes (b 1806), husband of Elizabeth Bewlay, who died 7-Nov-1842). Update 30- Jan-2003 - since Henry was alive in 1844 neither of these could be the husband of Ann Nelson.
• Family Records Centre entry - Death Dec 1840 STRANGEWAY John (York 23 476); could be the father of Henry and husband of Elizabeth. Updated Jan 2003

So until more information can be found this line cannot go back any further. However it does spread out when looking at all the descendents from Henry and Elizabeth.

Robert Strangeway (1845 or 1847-1922)

Robert married Dorothy Dooks at St Phillips, Leeds on 16 April 1867. Dorothy was born at West Tanfield on 14 June 1846 and her parents were George and Mary Ann (nee Mathison). Dorothy's family were living in Southgate, Market Weighton in 1861 (near Henry & Elizabeth) but by 1881 had moved to Fenton Street in Leeds. Since Robert and Dorothy were married in Leeds they both must have moved from Market Weighton before 1867. Even though they seem to have moved homes a number of times, all the addresses were in the Leeds / New Wortley area. Their children are thought to be -

Ann Strangeway (1854-?)

Ann married William Thomas Hatfield at Goodmanham on 7 August 1875 but she is thought to have had a son, Herbert Strangeway, born in May 1874. Apart from records of three further children being born in Market Weighton - Isaac Henry Hatfield (1876), Ann Elizabeth Hatfield (1879) and Lucy Agnes Hatfield (1880) - nothing more is known about this branch.

Henry Strangeway (1858-1920)

Henry married Mary Agnes Saltmer at Market Weighton sometime late in 1880 but by the 1881 Census they had moved to 30 Chatham Street, Leeds - the same address as Robert and Dorothy. Their son, Ernest, provided the confusion with the Ernest (1884) described at the start. Mary Agnes was born March 1859, a daughter of Nathan and Mary Saltmer (nee Hewson) of Market Weighton. There is an extensive Salmer family tree recorded - thanks to information from a Saltmer descendent in Australia. At the time of the marriage Mary Agnes already had two other children - Leonard (1877) and Rhoda Saltmer (1880).

Having followed the specific family line it is clear that there are still many gaps. When you consider the whole Leeds area in becomes clear that there are a number of other Strangeway families that do not seem to have any links with the one above. While looking for family members references to many unconnected Strangeway(s) were found. Some of these are recorded on the Strangeway Links and References page but other have been found when searching through the indexes at the Family Records Centre in London or parish records. These partial family trees and unconnected birth registrations should provide some clues for anyone looking for other lines.

Family Line A Updated Mar 2005

This family line seems to start from the James born 4 October 1789 and baptised 19 October 1789 at Wiggington - son of Robert and Jane Strangeways (nee Wallas). However there was another James born about August 1789 at Bossall - probably son of John and Mary Strangeway (nee Thompson) - even though this James seems have died young since there is a second James thought to be born to the same parents just 1 year later. The best guess is that this second James married Jemima Roberts on 19 October 1814 in Ilkeston, Derbyshire.

If this James is the son of Robert and Jane Strangeways (nee Wallas) then this family line can be traced back 3 more generations to George Strangways (1670-?). If correct then this family line links with Line B, Line D and Line E below as well as linking with Henry Strangeway (1813 - 1887) covered in first section. In other words, all of the Strangeway families in Leeds would be related and trace back to the York area. Only the line with the Strangeways surname is unlinked since it traces back to Northumberland.

Having obtained the birth certificate for William (1842) we now know that he is the son of James & Sarah (nee Matthews). This links him back to William & Ann (nee Mapham) and before that Robert & Jane (nee Wallas) - so linking with Family Line A above - if the identity of James is correct.
