In Britain the distribution of the Townsley surname is mainly through Yorkshire and the North East of England, Cumberland, Scotland and Northern Ireland. As a generalisation the Townley surname is mainly based in Lancashire and the North West of England - including some of the north western parts of Yorkshire.

The Burnley area is a "border" - in that it has families with both surnames as well as being the home of the once-powerful Towneley family. There are even Townley and Townsley street names in the same area! The former family seat, Towneley Hall, is now a council art gallery and park. A start has recently been made at putting some of the archives on the web - including records of interest to family historians and the Towneley family tree is available as an Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) download.

Just concentrating on the Townsley family lines - by 1881 there were at least two in Burnley and the surrounding towns. One clearly coming from Leeds in Yorkshire; the other linked to Little Marsden. It seems now that both of these families could be related - even though much more work needs to be done before the family tree can be confirmed.

The Leeds line is thought to be descended from Richard Townsley and Lydia Burrows. Richard and Lydia were married 5 Sep 1854 at Burnley Register Office. He was probably born about June 1829 in Hunslet, Leeds to Ann Townsley and she about 1830 in Brierfield; the daughter of Martin Burrows.

The Little Marsden line was thought to be unconnected to Richard since the local births went back to the 1820's. But now it seems possible that the families do have an earlier connection and this is shown below. In the 1881 Census this second family is represented by Robert (b 1826) and Elizabeth Townsley (b 1828, nee Clegg) who were living at 19 Victoria Street, Marsden with their 3 children - Catherine, Charley and Emma.

If anyone wants to take up the challenge of resolving the structure of these branches of the Townsley family tree then this list should at least provide good base of information to start from.

If you want to make a start then you should be aware that the above numbers refer to the registers held at the Family Records Centre in London - they are not the same as those used by District Register Offices. If you need to use a District Office then these reference numbers only give you the year and quarter to ask to be searched. You will need to provide more details - such as parents names for births - to be sure of getting the right person. Certificates cost 7 pounds sterling (or about $10 US) if applied for in person. If you can only apply by post then they are best handled through a family history agent who covers London - it can be significantly cheaper.
